Major charity shop set to close 190 shops by April 2027
The charity has announced it will close 90 stores by May 2026 and up to 100 more by April 2027
Cancer Research UK has announced plans to close nearly 200 of its shops over the next 18 months, marking a major blow to high streets across the UK. The charity aims to close 90 stores by May 2026 and up to a further 100 by April 2027.
The prominent high street chain, which currently runs 519 branches nationwide, will determine which stores to close based on their financial contribution, lease terms, and geographical spread. These changes could jeopardise 600 staff jobs and roles for up to 3,000 volunteers, reports the Express.
Some internal redeployment opportunities are expected to be offered, and assistance will be provided to help staff and volunteers find roles elsewhere.
In another setback, the charity will also cease operations of its online marketplace in early 2026, meaning it will no longer sell donated items on reselling platforms.
Without taking action, many of the charity's shops are predicted to become unprofitable. In recent years, the organisation has seen its revenue decline.
In its accounts for the year ending March 2025, the charity reported an overall retail income of £120.8 million but associated costs of £120 million. The previous year, its retail operations generated £120 million with costs of £116 million.
Cancer Research UK explained that its decision comes in response to rising costs, inflationary pressures, and changing consumer habits.
This includes the recent increase in employer national insurance contributions (NICs), a decrease in high street footfall, and growing competition from online resale platforms.
The charity’s chief executive Michelle Mitchell said: "Without action, we predict many of our shops will become unprofitable. A smaller, high-performing retail operation will mean we’ll fund more life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff and volunteers.
"This news will be difficult. Our decisions have been taken after serious consideration. We’re committed to supporting everyone affected by these changes, and will provide clear information and support throughout the process."
Nonetheless, it's not entirely bad news as the organisation plans to open 12 superstores by 2028, expanding its current network of 46 larger out-of-town outlets.
Cancer Research UK anticipates a £12.4 million boost over the coming five years as a consequence of the alterations being implemented.
