Knives Out star Daniel Craig weighs in on Detective Blanc's explosive fate at TIFF
EXCLUSIVE: Former James Bond actor Daniel Craig spoke to the Irish Star about his role in the latest Knives Out movie as he walked the red carpet at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival
At the Toronto International Film Festival, the Irish Star had a chat with Daniel Craig, where he exclusively shared his thoughts about his character, Detective Benoit Blanc, in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
The world premiere of Rian Johnson’s latest whodunnit took place today at the Princess of Wales Theatre in downtown Toronto’s Entertainment District. When asked if he would want his character to endure an explosive fate like some of the other characters in previous Knives Out films, Craig didn’t hesitate. “What? Being blown up on an island? No, I think it’s a bit excessive,” he said as he giggled, shocking fans.
Craig also joked about his potential involvement in a murder mystery on the TIFF red carpet. When asked what his alibi would be, he responded, “Oh, why, because I’m the murderer? You all would be my alibi,” he said with a laugh to the reporters on the carpet.
The premiere brought together an all-star cast, including Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, and Daryl McCormack. Director Rian Johnson, the creative mind behind the franchise, was also in attendance at the film festival.
Additionally, Edward Norton from Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery attended, along with Karina Longworth, host of the Hollywood history podcast You Must Remember This, who is also Johnson’s wife.
Thomas Haden Church, another cast member, was not present for the festivities.
Before the screening, the stars stopped by the Deadline Studio at Toronto’s boutique luxury BISHA Hotel for interviews and media appearances. The festival appearance comes ahead of a limited theatrical release on November 26, followed by streaming on Netflix starting December 12.
While details of the plot remain largely under wraps, early reports indicate that the movie will explore darker themes than previous installments. First-look photos suggest a gothic tone, with Catholic elements woven into the story.
O’Connor and Brolin are set to play a reverend and monsignor, respectively, while Kunis portrays a local police chief who partners with Blanc.
Rian Johnson spoke to Netflix about the inspiration behind the film. “Themes of guilt, mystery, morality, and fallible humanity all feel right at home in a church, with a man of God in the center of the mix,” he said.
“I have strong feelings about faith: both my own personal experience and how it intersects with our country’s cultural and civic life, and the ways that intersection touches all of us differently. So it felt like rich ground for a good story.”
