This afternoon, the PJM Interconnection's Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) zone entered EEA2, making public calls for conservation and curtailment due to “a power plant experiencing an unplanned disconnection from the BGE electric system”. With peak demand forecast significantly lower than the levels seen in late July’s heat wave, this event speaks to the fragility of a system under duress. Immediately following the morning disconnection, there was a small rise in local congestion, but it wasn’t until load ramped up into the afternoon that prices signaled the gap in power flows to meet local demand. At 08:46, an emergency outage was reported on the Brandon Shores 230kV network, and multiple lines on the Brandon Shores transmission system were placed on emergency outage. Following these outages, PJM issued Pre-Emergency Load Management Reduction actions, activating demand response by 10 AM. PJM has issued these alerts several times this summer, but even during late June’s heat wave, demand response was not activated until the afternoon. The plant at the center of these transmission outages, Brandon Shores, has been a high-profile facet of PJM’s growing capacity crunch. The plant’s operator, Talen Energy, sought to retire the plant as well as neighboring Herbet Wagner at the start of this summer. After identifying numerous transmission violations, PJM entered into reliability must-run agreements with Talen, to the tune of $180 million per year, to keep both plants online until May 2029. Last week during a U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing, Senator Angus King brought attention to a critical solution for unlocking grid capacity: Advanced Conductors.   During a discussion on how to upgrade grid infrastructure to meet growing demand, Senator King held up the ACCC® Conductor as an example of how Advanced Conductors can enable faster, more cost-effective upgrades to the electric grid.   “One way to change that is by doing Advanced Conductoring... here is [a traditional conductor] and here is a carbon-fiber based conductor... this little guy [ACCC® Conductor] will carry twice the capacity as this one [ACSR]... so if we put these on the grid, we don’t need to change all the poles and right-of-ways... and we can get a significant amount of additional throughput on the grid at a fraction of the cost of rebuilding the whole system.”   It's encouraging to see our nation's leaders call attention to Advanced Conductors as an effective solution to meet growing demands on the US transmission system.   Watch a quick video here: http://bit.ly/4f6mMkQ

ACP along with the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), and Advanced Energy United, has submitted a joint rehearing request to urge the Department of Energy to reevaluate their recent protocol, "Report on Evaluating U.S. Grid Reliability and Security.” This protocol relies on inaccurate science, biased data analysis, and a doomsday scenario to undercut the credibility of certain technologies during a time of soaring demand across the country. Power Purchase Agreements are where the disadvantages of often inequitable legacy energy systems come to a head. It's where the complexity of first mover risks materialise. That’s Madison Sturgess talking, from Original Power. Joining Josiah Fajardo to talk about how PPAs can work in remote area projects, using Boroloola’s new microgrid to be developed as an example, Madison told the audience at the First Nations Clean Energy Symposium: “PPA’s are also an opportunity for forward thinking, for consumer-minded energy companies to renegotiate with First Nations proponents the terms by which power, accountability, agency, and benefit are realised in a modern and just energy system." They were also joined by Chris Briggs who says there should be more PPAs. "Lots of renewable energy projects will need PPAs. "PPAs demonstrating First Nations benefits are more desirable."
