‘Complete masterpiece’ period drama with 'most talented' actor now streaming
Audiences can’t afford to miss this classic movie during spooky season
As the nights grow longer and Halloween beckons, many viewers are looking for a new watch to sink their teeth into, after others have enjoyed an "exceptional" period series and a drama compared to Charles Dickens' work.
Audiences should try this film streaming on the BBC iPlayer, which has been hailed as a hit by movie buffs after first hitting screens back in 1992.
One person posted on IMDb in their 10/10 review: “The atmosphere is dark and gloomy and completely draws us into the story.
“The cast and excellent direction make this film special. The details are subtle and carefully run through the story making this a great film experience.”
A second person wrote in their top-rated review: “This one really nails it. Lush, sensual, sexy\gory, beautiful and creepy. With just the right touch of humor [sic] to keep it in perspective.”
A third person commented: “Visually audacious, eerie and operatic version of the undead legend.”
Yet a fourth person noted in their 10/10 review: “Extraordinary, and hauntingly beautiful!
“Best Vampire movie ever!!! Period. Everything from the visuals, story and music are absolutely fantastic! Complete masterpiece.”
Bram Stoker’s Dracula came out in 1992 from the legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, adapted from the Irish author’s 1897 novel.
The film was set in the 19th century and followed Count Dracula (played by Gary Oldman) travelling to England to seduce the fiancée Mina Murray (Winona Ryder) of his barrister Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves), believing her to be the reincarnation of his dead wife.
Count Dracula became fixated with Mina after seeing a photo of her when Harker visited him in Transylvania to organise his real estate paperwork for a recently purchased English property.
Harker was left trapped in Count Dracula’s castle with his fellow vampires set upon the terrified lawyer, however, he managed to escape and send word to Mina who came to Transylvania to be with him.
However, Count Dracula was in hot pursuit as he planned to be reunited with his lost love.
The Hollywood movie boasted an all-star cast, which also included Anthony Hopkins, Richard E. Grant, Cary Elwes, Sadie Frost, Tom Waits, and Monica Bellucci.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula garnered much praise for Oldman from audiences.
A 10/10 review on IMDb read: “This is the best rendition of Dracula ever captured on film. Gary Oldman's dark and sensual personae outshines any other vampire who ever dare put on a cape.
“To me Gary Oldman is the most talented and underrated actor ever. He becomes who he is playing, however in this role... Dracula became him... Oldman set the bar so high it is untouchable even to Bela Lugosi.”
Someone else noted: “I have seen multiple versions of Dracula, but none compare to 1992's version starring Gary Oldman, the definitive Count Dracula in my opinion. This film is lavish, decadent and wonderfully vivid. It captured the gothic spirit of the novel, it's deep, romantic, and mixed with tender and violent moments.”
A third titled their top-tier review: “After Gary Oldman as Dracula, there is no other Dracula.”
