Chappell Roan praised by fans as she reveals why she really snapped at VMAs photographer

Chappell Roan, 26, had a heated exchange with a photographer during her red carpet appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards - and her fans defended her on social media

Chappell Roan has been praised by her fans as she explained why she snapped at a photographer at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night.

The 26-year-old singer and songwriter, legally known as Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, revealed details of the incident that happened on the red carpet. The rising star arrived dressed in a medieval outfit complete with a green cloak and sword when her red carpet appearance took a dramatic turn.

As her team was adjusting her attire, tensions flared when a photographer was heard saying "shut the f--k up." The singer quickly retaliated, pointing at an individual and firing back: "You shut the f--k up!" Although what followed wasn't entirely clear, Chappell's voice rang out distinctly as she exclaimed: "No! Not me b- - -h."

After the heated exchange, Chappell's journey down the red carpet continued and she later spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the incident. She said: "This is quite overwhelming and quite scary. For someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying, and I yelled back. I yelled back. You don't get to yell at me like that."

Many fans jumped to Chappell's defence on social media as one wrote: "I don't blame Chappell Roan at all for yelling at those photographers. I would have done the same if someone was barking commands at me." Another tweeted: "Chappell Roan could have told that man to shut up completely unprompted and I still would have been on her side."

Singer Noah Kahan also showed support on social media, writing: "I'll never forget leaving Clive Davis and the horrific s--t photographers and paparazzi or whatever were saying to me in front of my sweet mom who couldn't believe it was actually happening. Love this @ChappellRoan way to stand up for yourself."

Chappell, who won Best New Artist at the VMAs and performed her song "Good Luck, Babe" during the show, has recently spoken about establishing boundaries when it comes to interactions with her fans. She said: "I don't care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous, whatever. I don't care that it's normal. I don't want whatever the f--k you think you're supposed to be entitled to whenever you see a celebrity. I don't give a f--k if you think it's selfish of me to say no for a photo or for your time or for a hug – that's not normal, that's weird!"
