Jimmy Page and Gavin Rossdale lead tributes to Soundgarden's Chris Cornell following news of his tragic death

Musicians took to Twitter to share messages of love

Musicians have paid tribute to Chris Cornell after news broke of his tragic death.


The Soundgarden and Audioslave rocker has died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 52.


He gave his final performance just last night, when he took to the stage with Soundgarden at the Fox Theater in Detroit.


After news of his sad passing, a host of musicians took to Twitter to pay tribute.

Producer, songwriter and musician Nile Rodgers posted a message to Chris.

He wrote: "A mutual friend called me and tells me my bro passed away. #RIPChrisCornell You are a great artist Love to Vicki and fam @ nilerodgers"

Led Zeppelin rocker Jimmy Page also paid tribute.

He said: "RIP Chris Cornell Incredibly Talented Incredibly Young Incredibly Missed."

Bush frontman and The Voice judge Gavin Rossdale also sent a tribute.


He said: "I AM SO SADDENED BY CHRIS CORNELL PASSING. @ soundgarden TOTAL SHOCK.GREAT MAN.GREAT BAND.GREAT LOSS. LOVE TO EVERYONE IN HIS WORLD. XXX" [sic]

And Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy sent out a series of tweets.

He wrote: "Wow...this one is shocking. Chris Cornell was one of the benchmark vocalists of our generation...devastating loss. # RIPChrisCornell

"Crazy...just a few days ago, this came up on my iTunes Shuffle and I was floored by the songwriting"

Chris' rep, Brian Bumbery, said the star's wife and family were shocked.


Bumbery said: "His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing.

"They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time."

The statement also said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

Chris Cornell dead

Last night's gig was part of the band's North American headline tour.

They were due to travel to Columbus, Ohio for a concert on May 19 and were scheduled to appear in Maryland Heights, Denver, Houston, Dallas and Oklahoma where their tour would end on May 27.

As the lead singer for Seattle-based Soundgarden, Cornell helped inspire the 90s grunge rock movement.

He was also a Grammy award-winning, Golden Globe-nominated singer, songwriter, guitarist, composer and lyricist.

He later became involved in philanthropy and started the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation to support children facing challenges, including homelessness, poverty, abuse and neglect.
