Countryfile star Matt Baker's former co-star hits out at 'horrible' relationship claim

The One Show presenter Alex Jones recently alluded to a "horrible" claim about her relationship with former co-host Matt Baker, whom she worked with for nearly a decade

Matt Baker’s ex-co-star has hit out at what she dubbed a “horrible” term used to describe the pair’s relationship. Alex Jones, who co-presented The One Show with Matt Baker from 2011 to 2020, disclosed in an interview over the summer that she thinks a particular word has now become a “horrible little term.”

Matt, an avid farmer who broadcast his last episode from his family home in Durham during the pandemic, has since moved on to host countryside-focused programmes like Our Farm in the Dales and Countryfile.

Given that Matt is her longest-serving co-host on the BBC's flagship chat show, it’s only natural that they developed a close rapport over the years, a topic that came up during a conversation in August.

When quizzed about their on-screen chemistry, Alex told The Times (which suggested she might be reading “too much” into the question): “I think the word chemistry has become a horrible little term.”

She went on to say: “You can have chemistry with somebody you’ve just met because you can bounce off each other really well. It doesn’t have to mean, ‘Oh, are they in a relationship?’”

She concluded: “I certainly don’t think somebody looks at me and Roman and goes, ‘Oh, I wonder if they’re together?’”

These days, Matt dedicates the majority of his time to the Durham farm, though he has previously discussed his forthcoming aspirations.

When questioned about potential future instalments of his programme Travels with Mum and Dad, he informed Hello! that he simply goes “with the flow” when it comes to his family.

He also confirmed there were no immediate plans to continue the show, revealing that another programme was due later this year and he was “doing a lot” of TV producing.

He said: “When I left The One Show, that was the purpose of that, really, to set up my own production company to produce shows that people want to see, and it’s gone incredibly well.”

Matt went on to disclose his hopes for his two teenage children, Luke and Molly, whom he shares with his wife, Nicola. He reflected on his childhood on the farm and expressed that he’d like his kids to eventually take over the reins.

He explained: “I’ve worked hard to try and give my children the same upbringing that I had because it’s been so useful for me in my life.”

Nevertheless, Matt emphasised there wasn’t any pressure for them to follow suit. He added that he “would imagine” his teenagers would “definitely” have a life in the country, noting that this is where they “feel at home.”
