Demi Lovato shares emotional update after Donald Trump's vile gender ban
Demi Lovato has taken to social media to reveals why she reverted to using she/her pronouns, having previously coming out as non-binary and using they/them
Demi Lovato has stated that "nobody" can take away her non-binary identity after Donald Trump's vile rollout on gender identity.
The former Disney star announced on May 19, 2021, that she was non-binary and intended to use the they/them pronouns, after "a lot of healing and self-reflective work." In April 2022, Lovato said she was adapting the she/her pronouns after starting to feel "more feminine."
But just months later, she stated that although she no longer used they/them, she was still "very comfortable" with the pronouns. Following Donald Trump's presidential inauguration on Monday, Demi, 32, has taken to social media to offer a message of support to her online followers, as well as the non-binary and transgender community.
In view of her 154 million followers, the Heart Attack hitmaker said: "If you are trans or nonbinary like me, please know that I see you, I feel you, I am with you, you are validated, you are loved and you are not alone. No one can take away our identities and no one can tell us who we are or aren't.
"We will get thru this. I love you." Her emotional post comes after scandal-hit Trump stated that his administration will only recognise two sexes, male and female. He added that these are "not changeable" and officials should use the term sex rather than gender. The mandate will apply to all official documents including passports and visas, based on the individuals "immutable biological classification as either male or female."
Government agencies were urged to end promoting "gender ideology". In his inaugural address, the former reality star said: "We will forge a society that is colour blind and merit-based. As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female."
His decision has sparked controversy across the globe – with religious leaders even slamming the legislation to his face, The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington delivered a sermon, which Trump sat in the front row and she didn't hold back.
Addressing the congregation, she said: "In the Name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families. Some who fear for their lives."
Demi has always been extremely open about her own identity journey and explained that she found it "exhausting" to continually explain her decision to become gender fluid. She explained to GQ Hype Spain: "I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting. I just got tired. But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word."
She had also revealed her struggles when it comes to using public toilets and wanting gender neutral spaces for individuals. Demi said: "For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it. Or it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me."
