Heartstopper's Joe Locke dreams of receiving 'hate tweet' from Donald Trump

Actor Joe Locke has revealed he wants to receive a brutal tweet from former US President Donald Trump who is currently seeking to be re-elected

Joe Locke wants to get "hate-tweeted" by Donald Trump.

The 21-year-old actor is best known for playing Charlie Spring in 'Heartstopper', and he admitted he is surprised the Netflix drama - which is centred on the romance between his character and Kit Connor's Nick Nelson - hasn't attracted more vocal criticism from certain areas.

Joe told The Guardian's Saturday magazine: "This world is a very scary place sometimes, and it feels a bit weird that 'Heartstopper' has almost been immune to that a lot of queer shows get a lot of hate from rightwing groups, and 'Heartstopper' doesn't, and I don't really understand why. You'll often hear Trump supporters talking about queer people and queer shows. I want to get hate-tweeted by Donald Trump!"

Joe came out as gay to his mum when he was 12 years old and his friends not long afterwards, but he doesn't feel actors need to share their characters' sexuality. He said: "I wouldn't want to not be able to play a straight character, so I don't think it's fair to stop someone straight who can do all the research from playing a gay character. As long as you're playing a part authentically and with the best intentions, you're not just playing a stereotype, then go for it."

In the latest series of Heartstopper, which was released by Netflix last week, Joe and Kit's characters take their relationship to a new level as they explore intimacy and more grown-up topics. Speaking about their recent scenes, Joe told DigitalSpy: "It's weird, it's always going to be weird doing something like that but, I think we all knew it was time for them to take that step and we'd have been making jokes forever, like, 'Why won't they just…' so we were ready, but our intimacy coordinator David Thackery really worked with us. It's like a dance. Filming sex scenes is just weird."

Meanwhile, Kit revealed they had "sort of cups" to "keep everything safe" while they were acting out the raunchy scenes for the first time. But things became super awkward as he later revealed it was a "strange environment" to work in due to it being a "fake bedroom" built on a TV set.

He told the outlet that due to not being an authentic location, the rooms are "quite squeaky" and the bed is "quite squeaky". He added: "So I was thinking, come on, guys, you know, we're filming a sex scene here. You know, you're going to have to record sound. Put something down. Yeah and season three, this has been happening for three years but we finally got to the sex scenes and it was pretty creaky."
