Hollywood's greatest movie stars according to Mirror readers - from Streep to Pacino

Hollywood's greatest stars in absolutely no particular order... including James Stewart, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford and Sophia Loren

Our film critic Chris Hunneysett sparked a heated debate among Mirror movie buffs when he revealed his Top 30 pick of Hollywood actors and screen goddesses.

Scores of you wrote to say you disagreed with his choice of greats, which failed to mention the likes of James Stewart, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford or Sophia Loren.

Here, in no particular order, are your selections of the greatest stars of the silver screen...

Sophia Loren

No list of screen goddesses can be complete without the No1 actress of all time – the gorgeous, beautiful and talented Sophia Loren. Ask most men to look at this list and they would be sure to point out this glaring omission.

Roger Francis, Gravesend, Kent

William Holden

I’d like to have seen William Holden included. With his looks and voice he was captivating in Love is a Many Splendid Thing, Stalag 17 and Sunset Boulevard.

Janet Pearson, Lincs

Jodie Foster

I was shocked two-time Oscar winner Jodie was missing. From her role as a child prostitute in Taxi Driver to Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs, Jodie has real star quality.

Sue Ingle, Brighton

Michael Douglas

A good list but a glaring absentee is Michael Douglas who made great films including Fatal Attraction & Wall Street. Timothee Chalamet hasn’t earned his place.

Audie Murphy

He was slight in build and most of his films were Westerns but he was a real life hero and was a highly decorated soldier in the Second World War. Surely he deserves a place on any list?

T O Higgs, Stourbridge

Sir Alec Guinness

Surely, there’s room for Sir Alec Guinness in any list of greats? And for Sean Connery to be placed ahead of Paul Newman... the mind boggles!

Nigel Brown, Suffolk

Louise Brooks

Silent film star Louise Brooks should be in the Top 30 because she epitomised the Roaring 20s and is one of the most influential style icons of all time.

Carl Skelton, N’hampton

Forest Whitaker

Where was Forest? He’s made some excepti- onal films from The

Last King of Scotland to The Crying Game and also directs and produces.

Alan Gray, Cambs

Gregory Peck

How can Peck not be on your list while Schwarze- negger and Timothee Chalamet are? An icon, he was in great films – Roman Holiday, To Kill A Mockin- gbird, The Omen etc.

Joanna Jones, Liverpool

Gina Lollobrigida

I don’t entirely disagree with your selections, but in my view the beautiful Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida is one of the greatest Hollywood goddesses.

Paul Goodes, Essex

Robert Redford

Where was Robert Redford in your Top 30 male stars? From Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to The Old Man and the Gun, he has given us dozens of mesmerising big screen performances.

Jill Walsh, Bolton

Russell Crowe

I was surprised Russell Crowe didn’t appear on the list. He’s handsome and a brilliant actor in films like Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind and LA Confidential.

E Cromwell, Dagenham

Charlton Heston

Where was Charlton Heston? He is one of the greatest Hollywood males of all time when you consider his performance in everything from Ben Hur to Planet of the Apes.

Alan Joyce, Liverpool

James Dean

I agreed with a number of your choices but where was James Dean? Admittedly, he only made three films but his acting in breakthrough film East of Eden was excellent.

Joe Humphreys, Liverpool

Burt Lancaster

One obvious big name actor was missing from your list of Top 30 greats. How could you forget the star of From Here to Eternity and The Birdman of Alcatraz?

Raymond Lovett, P’smouth

Anita Ekberg

Reading your rundown of screen goddesses, I wond- ered where Anita Ekberg of La Dolce Vita fame was? Also Gina Lollob- rigida, Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale.

E R Thwaites, Cumbria

Jack Lemmon

I think Jack Lemon should get a mention. He appeared in more than 60 films, including hits like Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe and Glengarry Glen Ross.

Marlene Bridger, N London

Natalie Wood

I couldn’t believe that Chris failed to mention Natalie Wood and Deborah Kerr. They were both beautiful and great actresses and surely deserve a place in any list.

John P Logan, B’ham

June Allyson

It would be difficult not to agree with Chris’s choice of the 30 top female film stars but my favourite is June Allyson for whom, in my youth, I’d have walked over hot coals!

Brian Davies, Suffolk

James Stewart

How can anyone omit from a list of Top 30 male movie stars arguably the greatest of them all, James Stewart?

There are great film actors and then there are great movie stars, rarely do the two coincide.

James Stewart epitomised some of the greatest screen acting, combined with genuine star quality and for decades he was the first choice leading man for Hollywood’s top directors.

Roger Sampson, South East London

Al Pacino

How on earth is the brill- iant Al Pacino missing? Also, there’s no Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman or Robert Redford. Here are four supreme stars who have made many outstanding films.

Thomas O’Flaherty, Notts

Meryl Streep

The most amazing omis- sion was Meryl Streep. She only has a mere 21 Academy Award nomin- ations – and three wins! I think Chris’s eyes were glazed when he put Marilyn Monroe at No2.

Sam Johnson, Blackpool

Barbra Streisand

I know the job of narrowing down the Hollywood greats is hellishly difficult but surely Barbra Streisand should get a mention as a brilliant actress, singer and director?

Paul Barker, Alfreton

Cate Blanchett

The omission of Cate Blanchett raised an eyebrow. I was also astonished Tom Hanks didn’t make the Top 30 male actors. The likes of John Wayne couldn’t tie his bootlaces as an actor.

Martin Laffey, Hebburn

Spencer Tracy

How can your film critic list his Top 30 and leave out Spencer Tracy who was considered even by his own peers during the golden age of Hollywood to be the greatest actor of that era?

Garry Larkin, Kent

Gary Oldman

As usual Gary doesn’t get a mention. He is an amazing British talent and it saddens me that he had to go to America to get recognition. He is brilliant in all the films he’s been in.

Ali Christie, South London

Daniel Day-Lewis

I enjoyed reading your list and I like most of the actors mentioned but surely the brilliant Daniel Day-Lewis deserves a place? Morgan Freeman is a great actor but is often in a supporting role.

Tom Campbell, Stirling

Brigitte Bardot

In your list there were two obvious omissions – Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren who were both the biggest sex symbols of their era.

Maria Meredith, Hants

Mel Gibson

While I agree with most of Chris’s Top 30 male and female Hollywood greats I would also add Mel Gibson to the list who, to my mind, is a fantastic actor.

P Jones, Chelmsford

Sidney Poitier

Schwarzenegger, Willis, Cruise? Don’t make me laugh. Precisely which of their performances could be rated above that of Sidney Poitier in The Heat of the Night or Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
