Matthew McConaughey worries fans as he shares shocking pic showing ballooned eye completely closed over

The 'True Detective' actor, 54, shared the impact of the insect attack in a graphic photo posted to his Instagram page that showed him grinning despite his right eye being so ballooned and inflamed it had completely closed over

Matthew McConaughey has taken a bee sting to the face in his stride, sharing a shocking photo of the aftermath on Instagram. The True Detective star, aged 54, posted an image that showed his right eye completely swollen shut due to the severe reaction, yet he managed to keep his sense of humour intact, captioning the post: "Bee swell."

Details about where or how the sting occurred remain a mystery, but the Interstellar actor remained remarkably unbothered by the painful injury, as he updated fans on social media. McConaughey, who bagged an Academy Award for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, is currently wrapping up his new film, the crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King.

While the plot remains under wraps, snaps from the set have shown Matthew in character with several boxes of honey, hinting at a possible connection to his recent run-in with a bee.

Stings near the eye can be particularly dangerous, potentially causing serious issues like optic neuritis and even glaucoma, yet so far thankfully Matthew appears to have escaped any serious injury despite his worrying appearance.

This didn't stop fans from weighing in however, or from wishing the star well as he recovers from his injury. Among the dozens of comments left on his post, one fan hilariously referenced Matthew's famous line from the 1993 comedy Dazed and Confused "You just gotta keep livin', man. L-I-V-I-N," as he commented: "Gotta keep on LIVIN."

Others took to the comments to lend the star a more sympathetic ear, with one fan sweetly commenting: "Get well soon Mr. McConaughey. Hopefully, you have an ice ack on your eye. Benadryl and hydrocortisone cream will have you feeling better in know time. Get your coolest shades on and know that your fans love you."

Another fan meanwhile gushed: "You know something even with this eye a mess you still are beautiful." Even celebrities like the legendary supermodel Cindy Crawford couldn't help but comment, with the 90s icon writing: "Ouch!"

Hollywood A-lister Matthew, was spotted last year filming The Rivals of Amziah King in Alabama, and the production has since concluded and entered the post-production phase. Joining the star in the cast are big names such as Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, and Owen Teague.

This isn't Matthew's first brush with injury however; as back in 2008, he sustained a nasty cut to his face while preparing for 'The Grackle', a film that ultimately didn't see completion.

Not one to shy away from risky encounters, Matthew recounted to Vulture how he once stroked a live tiger on the set of his 2016 movie 'Gold', filmed as the very last scene perhaps not coincidentally, as he quipped, "If something happened during that scene, they wouldn't need me on the screen anymore."
