Met Gala 'curse' - 9 celebrity couples who split after a red carpet debut at the event
The Met Gala returned tonight and amid this year's instalment the Mirror has taken a look back at some former couples who split after debuting at the fashion event
Celebrities are gracing the Met Gala red carpet tonight for what's often described as the biggest night in fashion. The event has welcomed a host of stars to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York over the years.
Several famous former couples have chosen the venue as the backdrop to officially announce their relationship, only to later part ways. And although some couples are still together after making their red carpet debut at the annual occasion, it's led to rumours of a so-called 'Met Gala curse'.
There's often interest in the emergence of new romances at the event each year, despite guest's outfits being the main attraction. The likes of Selena Gomez, Barry Keoghan and Kylie Jenner have used the event to show off their new relationships, before splitting from their respective partners, as reported by the Mirror US. Ahead of this year's event, we've taken a look at just some of the couples whose relationships fizzled out after they made their public debut on the Met Gala red carpet.
Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan
Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter and actor Barry Keoghan are among the most recent exes to have made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Met Gala. They posed together at the event in May last year after being first linked months prior. Three months later it was reported Sabrina and Barry had split up after their apparent brief romance though.
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid had an on-off relationship from 2015 to 2021. They first graced the red carpet together at the Met Gala in 2016. The former One Direction member and the model made a rare public appearance together. After a brief separation, they rekindled their romance in 2019 and welcomed a baby in 2020, before finally parting ways the following year.
Selena Gomez and The Weeknd
In 2017, Selena Gomez and fellow singer The Weeknd - also known as Abel Tesfaye - officially stepped out as a couple. After being seen getting cosy during a dinner date and posting pictures of each other on Instagram, they strolled arm in arm down the Met Gala carpet. Months later, by October of the same year, they had called it quits though.
Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez
Singer Jennifer Lopez and former baseball player Alex Rodriguez made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala back in 2017, following rumours of a romance in the months prior. They ended up being together for four years and during that time J-Lo and A-Rod graced the event at the annual event three times. The now former couple later parted ways in 2021.
Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse
Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse - who were co-stars on the show Riverdale at the time - made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Met Gala in 2018, confirming their off-screen romance at the event. They returned in 2019 but it was then announced the following year that they had split up.
Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott
Reality TV star Kylie Jenner and rapper Travis Scott first stepped out as a couple at the fashion event in 2018, just months after welcoming their first child together in February of that year. The former couple, who returned to the event in 2019, reportedly split in 2023 though after an on-off relationship spanning five years.
Elon Musk and Grimes
Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and singer-songwriter Grimes were another couple who made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala one year. They were photographed together at the event, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in 2018. It was then reported four years later in 2022 that the pair, who now have three children together, had split up.
Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen
Comedian Sarah Silverman and fellow actor Michael Sheen made their red carpet debut at the fashion event, which is formally called the Costume Institute Benefit, in May 2014, just a few months after they started dating. The now former couple continued to date for three more years before it was announced in 2018 that they had separated.
Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs
Actor Robert Pattinson and singer-songwriter FKA Twigs also made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala. The former couple were seen together at the event in 2015, a year after they began dating. It was however later reported that the pair parted ways two years after their attendance in 2017.
