Tom Grennan's 'tough' parenthood admission after daughter's 'emotional' birth
Tom Grennan has opened up about the struggles he has faced since becoming a dad earlier this year, weeks after surprising fans with the news he had welcomed a secret baby daughter.
Tom Grennan says he struggled to find his place in fatherhood after welcoming his daughter, Dorothy, earlier this year, but has finally settled into the family unit. “For me, it was actually kind of tough because you go, ‘the baby actually doesn’t need me at all, what this baby needs is mum’.
"But then mum needs me, I need to be there just supporting and doing as much as I can. You don’t want to feel jealous of the fact that the baby wants what she wants, it’s more, it’s not jealousy, it’s just, ‘I’m useless right now’,” said the pop star, 30, who welcomed the new arrival with his Pilates teacher wife Danniella Carraturo.
“I’m third wheeling big time. I can’t feed her, I can’t do anything really, apart from just be really supportive with Danniella,” added Tom on his BBC podcast, You About?.
Supporting Danniella - who he met in 2020 and married last year -has become a priority more than ever for Tom now, who admits that seeing her giving birth has given him a new perspective.
"When I was in [the labour ward] all I was worrying about was Danniella. But she smashed it. And I think when you watch a woman give birth, it's a different level, man. Just seeing it, you're like, 'Wow, you are super human.' But it was so emotional, honestly," he told co-host Roman Kemp.
Despite becoming a dad earlier in the summer, The Little Bit Of Love singer chose not to announce the news until 22 August, when he shared a picture of Dorothy - nicknamed Dottie - to Instagram.
In a post, he wrote: "From the kid who never thought he'd make it, to three consecutive number one albums, joining an esteemed club to do so with the likes of The Beatles & Oasis - words will never be enough for the gratitude I feel."
"To now be stepping into fatherhood at the same time is the greatest gift I could ever imagine. Music gave me purpose, but being a dad gives me everything. Here’s to the past that built me, the present that grounds me, and the future I can’t wait for!"
He concluded by writing: "Thanks to all the fans for once again making my dreams a reality, I really couldn't do it without you all.
"It's going to be amazing to see so many of you on the upcoming tour in September. Honestly I'm so excited for what's to come, we are just getting started."
Opening up about his decision not to disclose the birth of Dorothy earlier, Tom has now said: ”I think, for me and my wife, we wanted to have the first few months with it just being our news and our families and friends.
“And now I’ve entered this new chapter of my life and it’s a beautiful one,” continued Tom, who added it was also “very” scary.
