New Netflix horror movie leaves viewers 'on the edge' and unable to sleep

With spooky season in full swing, the latest Netflix horror series The Fall of the House of Usher has been praised by critics and left fans on 'edge of their seats'

The latest Netflix horror series The Fall of the House of Usher seems to be perfect for spooky season.

Viewers of the series have been left terrified by the "sick and gory" film and warn others "not to watch if you want to sleep". The series contains eight episodes and came from the minds of the hit series, The Haunting of Hill House.

The Fall of the House of Usher is based on the 1839 short story by Edgar Allen Poe. It follows a corrupt pharmaceutical CEO named Roderick Usher, played by Bruce Greenwood. His children die one by one in gruesome ways that lead to Rodrick confronting his dark past.

"It's bats**t crazy in the best possible way," says actress Carla Gugino who plays Verna, a stranger from Roderick's past. "It has quite a lot of very dark humour, but also really touches the soul," she added. Twitter seemed to focus more on the scares than the laughs, however.

"Based on previous series, I'm just not gonna watch the fall of the house of Usher, and I advise you all to do the same unless you want sleepless nights," one fan wrote. Mike Flanagan, the director, is also responsible for The Haunting of Bly Manor and Oculus.

Another said: "I'm late to the Fall of the House of Usher hype, but I promise this show is a sick and gory romp that gets right to the chase. Mind-blowing deaths, wild sex, lying, cheating, grossly sick b*****ds — all the goodies. Mike Flanagan took tricky source material and made it his own."

Fans also seemed to be excited about callbacks to Mike's other hit series. "Ep.1 of The Fall of the House of Usher, and I LOVE how there are some elements from the Haunting of Hill House," one fan wrote on social media.

While some fans are scared, others seem to be loving the frights. "Watching the Fall of the House of Usher right now, and it is just so much fun. I am on the edge of my seat at all times," someone said.

Casual viewers weren't the only ones who seemed to be delighted by the series. It currently has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Film Stories said the series was "macabre, seductive and completely addictive" while The Gate said it was "deliciously gory and ghoulish."

The Verge said: "The mystery, which seems so obvious early on, becomes more complicated and even darker than I first imagined."
