Next Rangers Manager Odds: New favourite emerges as Steven Gerrard steps away from race
A former Rangers player is now the odds-on favourite to become the new head coach at Ibrox after Steven Gerrard's return was ruled out earlier this week
Rangers search for a new manager continues after the sacking of Russell Martin with yet another manager ruled out of the Ibrox job and now a new favourite has emerged.
Ex-Gers boss Steven Gerrard was lined up for a return to the Glasgow club with an agreement all but signed it seemed at one point. Bookies suspended betting as speculation was rife of the Liverpool legend to return to the club where he lifted the Scottish Premiership title.
Alas, it was not meant to be and joins the likes of Sean Dyche who were linked for the job but ruled out of joining the Scottish club. Now the bookies have priced up a new favourite with former defender Kevin Muscat is the frontrunner to secure the top job at the club.
Muscat, 52, is currently managing Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port FC where the club currently sit top of the table with a two point lead over Chengdu Rongcheng with just four games of the regular season left having already guided the team to a league and domestic cup double last season.
He has picked up league wins while managing Melbourne Victory and Yokohama Marinos either side of a torrid spell at Belgian club Sint-Truidense which last little over six months.
Betfred’s Robert Ford said: “Shanghai Port manager and former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat is the new odds-on favourite to become the next manager at Ibrox.
“Muscat was priced at 4/1 last week before Steven Gerrard turned down the opportunity to return as manager, but now his price has been slashed to 8/11 and is the overwhelming favourite to replace Russell Martin.
“Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is second in the odds at 10/3, whilst ex-Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is well positioned at 4/1 after previously being priced as far out as 25s when the market opened.
“Solskjaer’s former teammate Michael Carrick has also had his odds cut. The former England midfielder is at 10/1 after moving in from 33s and is joined by ex-Rangers interim manager Barry Ferguson and ex-Wolves boss Gary O'Neil at the same price.
“Hearts’ Derek McInnes is sandwiched between the leaders in the market and the 10/1 shots at 8/1 alongside Steven Gerrard, who despite turning down the role, is still amongst the names at the head of the odds.”
The former Australian international played one season for Rangers after singing for them in 2002 where he was part of a treble-winning season with the club under the guidance of Walter Smith. Having made 22 appearances for the club at the time, he then moved to Millwall.
Rangers currently sit 8th after picking up just one win in their opening seven matches and five draws since the start of the season. They look set to go into their match with Dundee United this weekend at Ibrox managerless with a trip to Norway soon after to face Brann in the Europa League group stage.
