‘Best ever’ action comedy with ‘infectiously fun’ premise now free for BBC viewers

Add this eighties classic to your weekend watchlist

An eighties action film that has been hailed as the 'best movie ever' is now streaming for free on BBC iPlayer.

The iconic Ghostbusters first hit cinemas in 1984 and soon cemented itself in Hollywood history. It follows a group of scientists who start a ghost-fighting service after losing their jobs.

But when the trio stumble upon a supernatural doorway that threatens to unleash evil into New York, they must save the city.

The genre-bending flick was directed by Oscar nominee Ivan Reitman, who went on to helm the sequel, aptly titled Ghostbusters II.

Meanwhile, legendary actors Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis starred as the comical scientists.

Starring alongside them was three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver, who you'll recognise from other iconic films like Alien and Avatar. The central ensemble was completed by The Family Business star Ernie Hudson.

Considering its star-studded cast, it's no surprise Ghostbusters impressed critics and casual viewers alike. The comedy currently boasts a rare 95% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Critics on the platform rave about the eighties hit, writing: "An infectiously fun blend of special effects and comedy, with Bill Murray's hilarious deadpan performance leading a cast of great comic turns."

Moviegoers are just as complimentary, with one five-star review stating: "Entertaining from the 1st minute to the last."

A second fan echoed the high praise, penning: "It's the best movie ever, and its even better on the big screen! Who ya gonna call?!"

While a third viewer said: "When I think of things that truly make me happy in life, this movie is definitely one of the first things. It is SO good. Most people that haven’t seen this movie usually just see the Ghostbusters as the topic of another Halloween song but I’d beg them to watch this."

And a fourth gushed: "This monumental movie perfectly blends sci-fi, horror and comedy, so much that it probably had a lot to do with shaping my sense of humour and personality. I’m tearin’ up just talking about it!"

If you are in search of a cosy Sunday afternoon watch, this top-rated classic might be worth a try.
