Mickey 17 release date, cast and plot as Robert Pattinson returns in most challenging role yet
Mickey 17 sees a downtrodden man escape Earth and join a deadly mission in Outer space
Robert Pattinson is back on the silver screen in a science-fiction film set on a foreign planet.
Mickey 17 sees the heartthrob as a dispensable worker who is routinely sent on deadly missions and cloned every time he dies.
The forthcoming film was written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, who made history at the 2020 Academy Awards with his hit film Parasite. The satirical drama became the first non-English-language film to clinch the Best Picture award at the Oscars.
Now, the South Korean filmmaker has ventured into outer space.
Here is everything you need to know about Mickey 17, including its release date, the dark comedy's plot and the actors in its star-studded cast.
What is the plot of Mickey 17?
Based on Edward Ashton's 2022 novel Mickey 7, the film is centred on a mission to colonise an ice planet named Niflheim. Its titular character, Mickey Barnes (played by Pattinson), joins the expedition in a bid to escape a dangerous loan shark threatening his life on Earth.
He signs up to be an 'expendable,' who is sent on fatal missions in the name of research. Each time he dies, Mickey is cloned using unethical technology that has been banned from Earth.
The dark comedy focuses on the 17th and 18th incarnations of Mickey, who are 'printed' four years into the trip.
When is Mickey 17 released and how can I watch it?
Mickey 17 will be released in the UK this Friday, 7th March.
The film has a runtime of two hours and 17 minutes and will be exclusively available to watch in cinemas.
Who stars in Mickey 17?
Pattinson, whose last big screen role was Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves' The Batman, stars as Mickey Barnes. The lead actor takes on the challenge of playing the two variants of Mickey as two distinct roles with different personalities and accents.
He is joined by Naomi Ackie, who starred in Zoe Kravitz's 2024 thriller Blink Twice. Ackie portrays Nasha Barridge, a security agent on the ship and Mickey's love interest.
The Walking Dead alum Steven Yeun plays Timo, a pilot on the expedition, who is Mickey's friend from Earth.
Hollywood heavyweights Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette take on the roles of fascist politician Kenneth Marshall and his wife Ylfa.
Mickey 17 releases in cinemas on Friday, 7 March.
