Netflix has just added a 'modern-day slasher masterpiece' that fans say 'deserves a wider audience'.

The film Thanksgiving will be included as part of the platform's offering from September 1. It comes at the ideal time for those who like to get a head start on their spooky season.

It was written and directed by celebrated horror filmmaker Eli Roth. Roth is known for creating the Hostel series of movies and the more recent adaptation of the video game Borderlands.

Thanksgiving actually began life as a fake film trailer devised by Roth, which appeared in the Grindhouse double feature by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.

Roth eventually went on to expand his fictitious trailer into a fully fledged feature. The plot of Thanksgiving sees a mysterious masked maniac terrorise residents of Plymouth, Massachusetts, one year after a Black Friday riot ended in tragedy. He picks off victims one by one, with the seemingly random revenge killings soon become part of a larger, sinister plan.

The title is actually Eli Roth's highest-rated movie, with an impressive 84% rating on the website Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviews argued that it was the director's best effort to date.

A critic claimed: "This throwback to 90s horror slasher is Roth’s best work." Another added: "I can absolutely see this film becoming a new holiday classic, solely on its opening scene..."

One review suggested the title has something for every fan of its genre. They penned: "Thanksgiving most of what people want from the slasher subgenre. It has some wit, it has twists, it has novelty, and it’s genuinely well-made."

These are views shared by most fans, too. As one shared their thoughts online, they argued: "This is an amazing horror film that Eli Roth has made and it should be getting more attention and it deserves a wider audience."

They continued: "This movie is sort of underrated, and it should be viewed higher. Great special effects, acting, directing, writing and performances. The opening sets up everything for the entire movie. I love the ending. Each kill is very violent, graphic, bloody and gory. This movie is my favourite that Eli Roth has done."

Someone else commented: "A modern-day slasher masterpiece. Wow! Similar to the likes of 1978’s Halloween or 1996’s Scream, Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is one hell of a throwback treat!"

One person replied: "Thanksgiving is so aggressively over-the-top, but at least it knows and embraces it. Eli Roth’s slasher film features some of the most gruesome and hilarious kills of the year. Silly & absurd B-movie horror that can be a killer good time if you’re open to it. He really blessed us with one of the best slashers in modern memory, hilariously over-the-top, blood-soaked carnage!"

Thanksgiving is streaming on Netflix.
