Netflix adds 'stunning' film from last year with 'Oscar winning performance' from Saoirse Ronan

It has been described as an "emotional journey of self-discovery"

Netflix has just added a 'stunning film' from the last year that some viewers claim has rekindled their love for cinema.

The Outrun, which only hit the big screen in 2024, has now found its way onto the streaming giant. Set to join Netflix's vast catalogue on Thursday (February 27), it will be available for subscribers to enjoy at their convenience.

The film features Saoirse Ronan in the starring role and is an adaptation of the memoir penned by journalist and author Amy Liptrot.

Ronan portrays Rona, a character fresh out of rehab for alcohol addiction, who returns to her childhood home in Scotland's Orkney Islands. Her English parents are separated, and she alternates between staying with her father on his farm and mingling with her mother's religious circle.

The narrative also unfolds through a series of flashbacks, revealing Rona's past as a graduate student, her impactful relationships, and the events leading up to her rehab stint. With an impressive 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was a strong contender during awards season.

There were whispers of an Oscar nomination for Ronan's performance in The Outrun. Although she didn't secure an Oscar nod, she did receive a BAFTA nomination but lost out to Mikey Madison for Anora.

Surrey Live reports since hitting the big screen, the film has been serenaded with accolades from fans and is now tipped to be a hit on Netflix.

One fan took to social media to declare it "a powerful and intense movie" while another expressed relief at its impact on their view of the film industry: "I've been moaning and complaining for the past couple of years about the state of the movie industry and the utter tripe we have to endure now from indie producers and big budget but The Outrun has restored my faith in good cinema."

The lead performance has also garnered high praise, with some feeling it deserved more recognition from award bodies. A viewer enthused: "Saoirse Ronan is a force in this film! True Oscar-winning performance. The film is beautifully shot."

Echoing this sentiment, another said: "Saoirse Ronan once again proves why she is one of the most captivating actors of our generation in The Outrun, a poignant and visually stunning adaptation of Amy Liptrot's acclaimed memoir."

Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, the film is hailed as a triumph of storytelling and emotional resonance, delving deep into themes of identity and redemption, underscored by nature's restorative essence.

Another viewer added their voice, saying: "The Outrun is a stunning, heartfelt journey of self-discovery and redemption set against the breathtaking Orkney landscape. A poignant film about healing, nature, and finding your way back to yourself. A must-watch."

The Outrun is streaming on Netflix.
