Netflix fans told to watch 'perfect' crime comedy after Thursday Murder Club disappointment

It's been suggested as an ideal alternative to the Richard Osman adaptation

Netflix fans have been told to watch 'perfect' crime comedy movie after the recent disappointment felt by Thursday Murder Club release.

The adaptation of the best selling novel written by Richard Osman has finally landed on the streaming platform. However, it has not been met with overwhelming acclaim, with some fans expressing their unhappiness with the release.

This is the same with some critics too although at the time of writing it has still managed to score 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. That number is expected to change as more reviews are published.

Giving it only two stars, Empire magazine declared: "Maybe this would hit the spot for a Sunday-night sofa slump but it’s more patronising than perceptive when it comes to portraying ageing. As disappointing as a stale scone."

Meanwhile, The Mirror's Katie Palmer warned those who had enjoyed the book to be left feeling frustrated after watching the film version. This is despite the stellar on talent in front and behind the camera with Chris Colombus directing and it starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie as the leads.

She wrote: "I desperately wanted the film to be brilliant...but was heartbroken when, after watching it, I realised it just wasn't meant to be and the book should have been left alone. What could have been an emotionally hard-hitting and captivating cinematic experience turned out to be, in my opinion, a cringeworthy cosy crime drama."

However, thanks to streaming there are countless options to move onto to help remedy this disappointment. One such title for those who are looking for a quirky murder mystery filled with A-listers is See How They Run.

Unfortunately, you will need to switch streamers as the film is only available on Disney+. Set in 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered.

When a world -weary inspector and an eager rookie constable take on the case, they find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid world of underground theatre, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril.

The film just like Thursday Murder Club, is brimming with talent. Its cast includes Sam Rockwell, Saoirse Ronan, Adrien Brody, Ruth Wilson, Reece Shearsmith and Harris Dickinson. It boasts a similar Rotten Tomatoes rating to the new Netflix film but more critics were impressed with its handling of the central mystery.

It very much wears its Agatha Christie influences proudly and is one for the whodunnit purists. One fan argues that one of the film's leads may result in you asking 'Helen who?'

They said: "Wonderful experience. It's hard to do murder mystery and add comedy to it but, this movie is the perfect example of how to do it. The jokes are subtle that makes you smile throughout the movie and performance of Saoirse Ronan as Constable Stalker is the most pleasing. Saoirse is probably the best actress of our times."

Thursday Murder Club is streaming on Netflix and See How They Run is streaming on Disney+
