'One of the best movies of the 1990s' that somehow has 15% on Rotten Tomatoes now on Netflix

The teen black comedy film drew inspiration from Heathers and Carrie.

Netflix has added a much-loved film to its library starring Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, Julie Benz, and Judy Greer.

The movie from 1999 follows a group of teenage girls at high school who try and cover up the murder of their best friend.

Written by Darren Stein, it was initially drafted as a horror film, but ended up being a dark comedy.

The film in question, Jawbreaker, went through a number of tweaks before it was released, including a recasting and a cut-down sex scene.

The role of Julie originally went to Rachael Leigh Cook, who was replaced with Rebecca Gayheart because producers felt she did not have the right chemistry with the cast.

Later, there were objections to a graphic sex scene between Rose McGowan character Courtney Shayne and The Stranger, played by singer Marilyn Manson.

The scene had to be cut down so it could be given an R rating instead of an NC-17.

The film only has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 15%, with critics highlighting similarities to 1988's Heathers, claiming Heathers was better.

On Google Reviews, one fan said: "Film really wasn't all that bad. In fact, it's probably one of the better teen movies of the 90s, along with Cruel Intentions and The Craft among others that I enjoyed.

"While it's not the best film I've ever seen (and certainly not as good as Heathers), I can't help but give it a lot of credit for exploring much darker and more ominous elements that not too many mainstream high school films have done before- and it's very rare to see a teen film like this being made today.

"Not to mention, Rose McGowan's performance as the vindictive leader of the Flawless Four is a definite highlight."

Reel Film Reviews said on Rotten Tomatoes: "A watchable yet somewhat forgettable endeavour that's deservedly become a cult classic over the years."

However, Chicago Reader slammed the film for its "lame shock scenes", adding: "Crucial plot points inserted without setups and an unsuccessful attempt to exploit the camp value of some actors cast in minor parts are the least of the problems in this black comedy."
