‘Outstanding’ true-story drama with Oscar winner now on Prime Video

The critically acclaimed drama is based on a true story

Julia Roberts fans will be thrilled to learn her Oscar-winning role is now available to stream on Prime Video.

The celebrated actress earned Academy Award nominations for Steel Magnolias and Pretty Woman in the nineties, but it was Erin Brockovich that saw her take home the Best Lead Actress prize.

Originally released in 2000, the legal drama stars Roberts as single mother Erin. After landing a job as a legal assistant, she takes on the case of a powerful Californian energy company accused of polluting a small city's water supply.

The inspirational film is based on the true story of American woman Erin Brockovich, who initiated the real-life legal case in the early nineties.

It was written by Susannah Grant and directed by award-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, who were nominated for the Best Original Screenplay and Best Director Oscars, respectively.

The flick also bagged a nod in the Best Supporting Actor category for Albert Finney, who plays Roberts' boss.

Elsewhere, Rotten Tomatoes critics gave the noughties drama an 85% score, while casual viewers awarded it an 81% rating.

The critics' consensus reads: "Taking full advantage of Julia Roberts's considerable talent and appeal, Erin Brockovich overcomes a few character and plot issues to deliver a smart, thoughtful, and funny legal drama."

Meanwhile, a viewer on the platform simply penned: "Outstanding and engaging!"

Over on IMDb, one viewer praised: "It has everything, ranging from real-life documentary through love story via comedy to tragedy. And it is so lovingly done, and played so well. And it also has a wonderful soundtrack."

A second chimed in, "Erin Brockovich was one of my favourite films of the new century, and I think it will please everyone who sees it."

And a third viewer gushed: "So good you'll watch [it] again and again," before adding: "I've seen the film seven times since it came out. Why? Because it's poignant, funny, touching, moving, and a true story. Julia Roberts hits every note and makes her character accessible to all."
