The Twits star says 'no more reboots' as they insist 'we need more original stories'

EXCLUSIVE: The Twits actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has opened up on working on the iconic Roald Dahl story which has never been adapted to the screen until now.

Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has spoken about her ‘exciting’ new role in Roald Dahl’s The Twits, which has never been taken to the screen before.

The Netflix actress also stressed the need for ‘original stories’ instead of remakes, expressing her hopes that the streaming giant will set a trend in commissioning projects that feel brand new.

In an exclusive interview, Ramakrishnan spoke about how playing Beesha in the upcoming netflix film made her want to see some of Dahl’s other lesser-known works finally brought to the screen.

The 23-year-old star also revealed her favourite Dahl movie adaptation of all time - and it’s an absolute classic of the animation genre.

Following Netflix’s deal with the Roald Dahl Story Company, Ramakrishnan was asked which of his stories should be adapted next that she would also like to star in.

“I don’t know which one I would do,” she considered, “I’ve been spoiled now because we’re the first adaptation of The Twits.

“So the question is, ‘Do I do something that’s already been done or go for another fresh one?’

“And then I’d have to read up on all these new fresh ones that haven’t been touched…”

She then went on to explain that she was tempted to say Fantastic Mr Fox, as the Wes Anderson classic is her favourite Dahl movie adaptation.

“But it’s already such a great film,” she reasoned, before deciding: “I don’t even want to touch it, leave it alone. Don’t touch it, don’t bother, leave her alone.”

“Actually, just leave all of them alone,” she said. “We don’t need more adaptations. Bring original stories to the forefront.

“New - no more adaptations. We’re not in reboot, rehash hell. Come on now, wrap it up. It’s got to be an original. I’d have to do my research.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Ramakrishnan spoke once more about her love of Fantastic Mr Fox, saying: “It’s super cool to be in the first adaptation of one of [Roald Dahl’s] books, which is such an honour in itself because there is so much pop culture influence that he has brought to the world.

“Fantastic Mr Fox is one of my favourite animated movies, so that’s very exciting.”

Animated film The Twits is an ambitious adaptation of Dahl’s original short story of the same name.

In the film, Ramakrishnan plays brave orphan Beesha, one of the new characters brought into the story alongside her best friend Bubsy (Ryan Lopez).

Meanwhile, Hollywood legend Margo Martindale plays Mrs Twit and British comedian Johnny Vegas portrays her husband Mr Twit.

Netflix’s official synopsis for the film directed by Phil Johnston reads: “The Twits tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Twit, the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people on the face of the earth, and their epic battle against a family of magical Muggle-Wumps and two brave children who refuse to let the Twits’ cruelty win.”
