Poundland makes major U-turn on store closure after shutting 57 branches

One of the stores that was due to close will now stay open 'for the foreseeable' and shoppers are happy about the positive update

Poundland has made a major U-turn on plans to close one of its stores - much to the delight of shoppers.

The budget retailer is in the middle of closing 68 branches, after being sold to investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1. One of the stores that was due to close its its branch in Irvine, Scotland - but now, Poundland has confirmed this shop will stay open "for the foreseeable".

The Irvine store is located in the Rivergate Shopping Centre and was due to shut on September 14. One shopper said: "Aww this is fantastic news, I'm sooo pleased for all the girls who work there." Another said: "omg buzzing."

A Poundland spokesperson said: "We’re pleased to confirm that our Irvine store at the Rivergate Shopping Centre will remain open for the foreseeable future.

"As you know the store was planned to close on September 14, but we’ve been able to come to an interim accommodation with the landlord that allows us to keep trading. We appreciate the patience of customers and colleagues alike over the past few weeks."

Poundland has already closed, or is scheduled to close, 57 stores since August as part of its restructure. The budget retailer - which had its restructuring plan recently approved in the High Court - had around 800 stores before it was sold.

Poundland expects the latest closures, alongside leases expiring, will see its store estate eventually reduced to between 650 and 700.

On top of this, the high street giant will also close its distribution centre at Darton, South Yorkshire and its national distribution centre at Bilston in the West Midlands in early 2026.

It comes after the discount chain revealed it is rolling out a new simpler £1, £2, £3 pricing structure to its UK stores, as part of plans to go "back to its roots".

The new pricing will be available in all UK stores in phases between now and September, following a successful trial at 17 stores in the West Midlands.

In the pilot stores, prices were significantly reduced and ranges re-focused on customer favourites. The proportion of grocery items at £1 increased to over 60%.
