Moment speeding driver crashes head-on into car leaving woman with horrific injuries

Dash cam footage caught the terrifying moment Samuel Tiley's Subaru Impreza smashes into Jodie Wynne's Ford Fiesta in Winterbourne, near Bristol

The terrible moment a reckless driver smashed head-on into a woman's car, leaving her with life-changing injuries, has been caught on dash cam .

Footage shows a Subaru Impreza speeding down a road in Winterbourne, near Bristol , and straight into an oncoming Ford Fiesta on the opposite side of the road.

The Subaru Impreza had already overtaken one car and swerved into the path of a bus before the crash, and almost flipped over in the chaos.

It balanced on the driver's side wheels, before coming down hard and to an abrupt halt when it dropped onto all four wheels, on February 6 last year.

Jodie Wynne, the driver of the Ford Fiesta, suffered four fractured ribs, severe bruising, a broken foot and broken leg bones after Samuel Tiley crashed into her.

It is thought that Tiley, 24, of Yate in South Gloucestershire, was driving at around twice the speed limit when the crash took place.

One expert calculated that Tiley would have had to be driving at between 54 and 58mph through a 30mph zone, and overtaken at 75-81mph through a 40mph zone.

Tiley pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, just one week after he was caught driving at 70mph through a 50mph limit.

Judge James Patrick jailed him for 16 months at Bristol Crown Court on August 7, 2019.

The judge told Tiley: "You were driving very fast when you should not have been.

"There is a very high degree of harm in this case."

Tiley was banned from driving for four years and told to take an extended driving test.

Tabitha Macfarlane, defending Tiley, said he was a man of previous good character who may have been suffering from the bereavement of his mum around the time of her birthday when the crash took place.

Ms Macfarlane said: "He doesn't want to drive again. He is really sorry.

"He is truly devastated for what he has done."

Ms Wynne told the court she is now unable to straighten her leg or fully bend her knee, and said the injuries stopped her starting a new job.

She declined to comment as she left court.
