Donald Trump is heading back to the White House after he passed the magic number of 270 Electoral College votes needed to claim the top job.
The billionaire businessman has returned to the White House after months of fierce campaigning across the pond– and even declared himself winner early while votes were still being counted on Wednesday morning.
The tightly-contested race saw Trump and Kamala Harris neck and neck in their battle to the White House right up until the winner was named, with more than 70 million Americans heading to the polls to cast their vote. Early surveys found the battle to be one of the closest calls in US Election history.
In a near-repeat of his shock 2016 win over Hillary Clinton, Trump has once again confounded the polls, which were suggesting a narrow victory for his rival. Ms Harris held the smallest edge over Mr Trump only hours before the result at 48% to 46.8%, according to polling aggregate FiveThirtyEight.

In the same month, Donald Trump was shot at an open-air rally in Pennsylvania by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. The bullet, fired from the roof of a disused building nearby, punctured Trump's ear and narrowly missed his head before Crooks was himself shot dead by secret service agents. One person in the crowd also died and two people were left critically injured.
In September, Trump survived a second alleged assassination attempt while golfing at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested after he was spotted lurking in bushes outside the course with a rifle.
