Robert Lewandowski explains why Man Utd transfer collapsed despite him 'being ready'

If there has been one complaint about Manchester United's free-flowing attacking under Ole Gunnar Soksjaer, it has been the lack of a natural centre forward.
The likes of Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford have all shone under the Norwegian, but none are naturally suited to being an archetypal ‘No. 9’.
The arrival of Edinson Cavani has added a presence to United’s forward line, but it’s a short-term signing that could leave them back in the market over the next 12 months.
In terms of central strikers, there are currently none better in world football than Robert Lewandowski.
The Bayern Munich striker was named as the world’s top player at the FIFA Best Awards ceremony, beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to the award.
Lewandowski fired Bayern Munich to an historic treble last season, scoring 55 goals in the process, including 34 in the Bundesliga, 15 in the Champions League and 16 in the DFB-Pokal.
The Poland international joined the European champions in 2014, leaving Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer.
But he’s revealed it could have been a different story, with Lewandowski ‘ready’ to sign for United back in 2012.
“After my second year in Dortmund, I had a conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson,” he told France Football.

“But Dortmund didn’t want to let me go. It didn’t bother me more than that because things were going well with Borussia.”
Ferguson would end that window with his striker, landing Robin van Persie from Arsenal, a signing which earned them their most recent Premier League title.
However, that proved another stop-gap signing at Old Trafford and while the Dutchman is now retired from professional football, Lewandowski is still undoubtedly the best in the game.
