Rangers shortlist Frank Lampard for vacant manager's job despite woeful Chelsea stint

Former Derby and Everton manager Frank Lampard is currently a free agent after his second spell with two-time European champions Chelsea finished at the end of last season

Rangers are interested in appointing Frank Lampard as their new manager.

Lampard has been out of work since his short-term deal with Chelsea expired in May. His second spell at Stamford Bridge didn't go to plan, as the Blues won just one of his 11 games in charge to complete their worst Premier League finish since 1994.

Rangers are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Michael Beale on Sunday. The Glasgow giants suffered a humbling 3-1 home defeat to Aberdeen on Saturday to leave them seven points behind bitter rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has been given the job on an interim basis but is unlikely to become their full-time manager due to his playing career. Pascal Jansen, Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat are the other managerial names in the frame.

As reported by The Telegraph, Lampard is open to speaking to Rangers about the vacant position. The Englishman is ready to consider a return to management if the opportunity arises and has previously spoken very highly of the Ibrox club.

Lampard even sat among Rangers fans for their 2008 UEFA Cup final defeat to Zenit St Petersburg at the Etihad. He admitted to having a "great fondness" for the Scottish giants at the time and said "the best friendly" he's played in was at Ibrox.

Yet it's too early to say whether Rangers will give him a chance. Lampard has a modest record in management. He spent one season at Derby and guided them to the 2019 Championship play-off final, but they lost 2-1 to Aston Villa at Wembley.

Lampard was given the Chelsea job in July 2019. On a limited budget, his team finished in the Premier League's top four and reached the FA Cup final, losing 2-1 to Arsenal. Yet he was sacked by the Blues in July 2021 after a poor start to the following term.

Lampard was then appointed by Everton in January 2022 and guided them to Premier League safety. Yet he was sacked a year later with just 12 wins to his name. He then returned to Chelsea for an interim spell in April, with that proving to be a nightmare.

Rangers will talk to other candidates before they make a decision. Jansen guided AZ Alkmaar to a fourth-placed finish in the Eredivisie last season, while former Monaco boss Clement is another candidate and has won silverware in Belgium with Genk.

Muscat is a familiar name to Rangers fans having won a domestic treble with the Scottish giants in 2003. The former Crystal Palace, Wolves and Melbourne defender has won titles as a manager in Australia and Japan and is currently in charge of Yokohama F Marinos.
