Shane Lowry mocks Keegan Bradley in Ryder Cup celebrations with F-bomb message
Keegan Bradley spoke bullishly about what the United States Ryder Cup team were going to do to Team Europe at Bethpage – words which have now come back to bite him
Shane Lowry has posed for a photo with the Ryder Cup below a quote from Keegan Bradley that has not aged well. The United States captain was bullish about what his team would do to Europe when they played at Bethpage.
The visitors, however, became the first team to win away from home for over a decade, dating back to 2012. Europe won 15-13 in the end, with Shane Lowry earning the half point that they required to retain their trophy from two years ago.
They led 12-5 before the Sunday singles started after winning the first four sessions of foursomes and four-ball. America fought back in the singles, but Europe did enough to get over the line, with Tyrrell Hatton 's half point in match ten giving them the outright victory.
Lowry has described their win as a lifelong dream in two separate posts on social media. Attached to one is a photo of the Irishman holding onto the Ryder Cup trophy beneath a quote from Bradley printed onto a wall at the course.
"We are going to go to Bethpage to kick their f***ing a**," it reads, with it attributed to the U.S. captain. The infamous quote is from mid-February and the seventh and final episode of the third season of the Netflix documentary series 'Full Swing'.
Bradley made the remark inside the U.S. team room after winning last September's Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal. It was the end of a speech that began with a particularly prophetic line.
"I'm gonna get criticised as the captain next year," Bradley began. "They're gonna underestimate me. They're going to doubt me."
"I've been doubted my whole f***ing life," he continues. "That's when I do my best work," before proclaiming: "We are gonna go to Bethpage to kick their f***ing a**."
They did not, far from it, but they made it tough for Europe in the end, as Lowry acknowledged after his Sunday singles match. "I've been so lucky to experience amazing things in this game," Lowry said to Sky Sports, "that was the hardest couple of hours of my life.
"Honestly, I just can't believe it. I can't believe that putt went in. I was just stood over it going, 'Well, this is it.' I said to Darren [Reynolds, Lowry's caddie], walking down to 18, 'I have the chance to do the coolest thing in my life here.'
"The Ryder Cup means everything to me, honestly. I won The Open in Ireland, it's amazing, it's a dream come true, but the Ryder Cup for me is everything.
"To do that there today in front of everyone, it's like...it was so hard out there. I mean, fair play to the U.S. lads, like, we knew they were going to come out fighting.
