Joe Wicks shares his top Parkrun tips as he bids to get people moving
Parkrun is a free event that takes place every Saturday morning all across the world and The Body Coach wants to inspire more people to get involved
Almost four million people have taken part in a Parkrun since it launched with just 13 participants two decades ago.
The free, community event where you can walk, jog or run the 5k distance takes place every Saturday morning, with a shorter 2k route for juniors and their families the following day. Parkrun is an inclusive event where all abilities are welcome, with no time limit and a tail walker accompanying those at the back of the pack.
Joe Wicks, aka The Body Coach, is an ambassador for Brooks Running - one of Parkrun's official partners. He has run the London Marathon twice and recently conquered the Great North Run. He has shared his top five tips for those keen to get involved:
1. You don't have to be fit to turn up and enjoy it
You can be a complete beginner. I'm championing the slow plod - the Jeffing (run-walk) - because there's so much pressure with social media now to be running fast. You can walk or Jeff 5k and before you know it you will be running it. The average person just wants to get moving and that's the most important thing.
2. It gives you accountability and structure
Rain or shine you know all around the world at a certain time each week there will be someone there to run with you. Even if it's just once a week, it will be great for you in so many ways. It's also a social thing where you can connect with others.
3. Do it for your mental health
People always think it's about the physical, losing weight, but the mental benefits of getting out in nature in a beautiful park somewhere with other people is calming and destressing.
4. You don't need fancy kit
You don't need an Apple watch, Woop band and a £300 kit - you just need a pair of trainers to get going. It's accessible and completely free, which is amazing.
5. Keep coming back and setting goals
If today you walked it, next week could you jog some of it and walk the rest. Having a target or a goal and seeing that progression boosts your confidence and you will see your fitness levels improve if you're consistent and keep showing up.
