Most bizarre red card ever? Melbourne Victory striker sent off - while he's checked for concussion

It takes a special kind of madness to commit an offence worthy of a red card… while lying down, getting treatment from your physio

Referees sometimes have to brandish cards for peculiar reasons.


We've seen yellows given for doing handstands. There have been red cards handed out for grappling with pitch invaders. There have even before former Premier League stars sent off for ripping up the ref's notebook.


However, Melbourne Victory striker Besart Berisha may just have taken the prize for the strangest dismissal we've ever seen.


Take a look at the clip above and you'll soon see what we mean. The notoriously 'fiery' Albanian was not just lying on the floor injured; he was getting checked for concussion, after getting elbowed in the chops by Wellington Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund.


As any professional player knows, you can occasionally get a few choice words from the opposition when you're down, accusing you of making a meal of your "injury".

But this is the first time we've seen a player manage to kick out at an opponent while a medical expert checks to see if his brain is still working properly.

There are more dignified ways of being sent off…


Berisha - who has now got a two-game ban - was backed by his manager Kevin Muscat, who said, "Some of the treatment Besart receives is unacceptable. His crime was getting elbowed in the head."

Still, we shouldn't be too surprised. As fans of Millwall (where Muscat used to play) will tell you, he wasn't averse to the odd bit of madness when he was playing the game…
