All iPhone users issued with an urgent price alert, and ignoring it could be costly

Anyone with a new iPhone in their pocket might want to follow some urgent advice.

It's almost September, and that means one thing in the yearly tech calendar: it's almost time for a new iPhone. Apple almost always launches shiny upgrades in the autumn, and we don't expect 2025 to be any different. In fact, the US technology giant may hold a major launch event as early as September 9th, where the latest iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models will get their first unveiling. Some rumours also suggest that super-skinny iPhone 17 Air might also be shown to the world, with this gadget offering fans a device that's far easier to handle.

Full details about a launch could be confirmed soon and that means owners of current devices such as the iPhone 14, 15 and 16 might want to act fast.

It's no secret that older call makers tend to drop in value once something new goes on sale, and it's thought that this same trend will happen again this year.

One trade-in site reckons current models could fall by as much as £300, which is clearly a huge amount of money to lose.

"The iPhone resale market stays the same year after year, yet most people still wait until after the new models are announced to sell their old phones," Sam Wilson, Director at Gadget GoGo said.

"By then, it's too late, and the market becomes saturated with old models and values drop."

The worst affected could be older Pro models with these more premium gadgets facing the biggest fall.

"Pro and Pro Max versions can lose £150-300 in value within the first month after a new launch. That's a lot of money they could have pocketed by acting just a few weeks earlier," Wilson added.

"iPhones generally retain their value better than other brands, which makes the timing of selling even more important. You're starting from a higher resale value, so the actual amount you lose by waiting can be huge."

It's worth remembering that Apple does offer its own trade-in options but, if you are thinking of upgrading to the iPhone 17, it could be worth seeing what your device is worth now if you want the very best price for what you already own.

The only thing to be aware of is that Apple probably won't start stocking the iPhone 17 in stores until much later next month, so make sure you have an old device you can use as a stopgap before trading in.

What will be new on the iPhone 17?

Apple won't reveal anything until its famous keynote kicks off in Cupertino, California. However, rumours are rife that the new devices will get a refreshed look, faster processor, better cameras and longer battery life.

Updated colours could be added along with the inclusion of the iPhone 17 Air , which will be far slimmer than anything the firm has launched before.
