Small Greek town becomes Hollywood hotspot as blockbuster movie starts filming

Methoni has become a hive of activity as filming for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey gets underway

The picturesque Greek town of Methoni has recently become a hotspot for Hollywood's elite as filming for Christopher Nolan's Odyssey commences along the village's stunning coastline.

The film, an adaptation of the Ancient Greek epic poem of the same name, is set to feature Matt Damon as Odysseus. The star-studded cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.

Locals and tourists alike have taken to social media to share glimpses of ancient-looking vessels on the Ionian Sea. Footage of the filming has been shared by Kalypso Residence, a new holiday villa complex in the village. One video provides a more detailed look at the set.

The narrator explained: "The castle of Methoni is being used as a set. You can see the flags they've added to the castle. You can see Nolan filming on a boat. Fake walls have also been added on the outside."

Focusing on some boats at sea, they continued: "These are the boats that will be carrying Odysseus and his men.

Other villagers have chimed in with their thoughts on their hometown being transformed into a movie set for this highly anticipated blockbuster.

One commented: "So exciting for our small town. Thank you for sharing. Another revealed they had already spotted one of the stars, writing: "I was there and I saw Christopher Nolan just two meters away!"

Filming has been taking place across the Mediterranean since February, with other locations, including Italy and Morocco. According to reports the stars will soon be moving along the Greek coast for filming at Voidokilia beach Messinia.

Methoni is a beautiful village located in the Pylos-Nestor region and was formerly part of the Messenia region until 2011. It is believed to have been settled since the Ancient Era and is believed to be the ancient city of Pedasus, which Homer makes reference to in the Iliad.

Methoni's most-visited tourist attraction is Methoni Castle, which dates from the medieval era. Besides delving into the past, visitors can indulge in boat trips to Sapientza Isle or biking adventures along the breathtaking coast.

Commenting on TripAdvisor, visitors have sung the village's praises, with one writing: "What an extraordinary place. The seaside fortifications and the bridge to the castle are quite well preserved. The area is large with lots of structures to explore. The Castle on the water is superb. This is a must see destination if you are in the area."

Another added: "We love Methoni, there is a lot to explore. We feel it is the best fortress by the sea. We have been here three times to bring our friends.

"The lighthouse, long bridge over the mote, and front entrance gate are spectacular. But don't miss exploring the back mote and seawall. Through the middle wall. Pictures will never do it justice. There are breathtaking views everywhere. It is a magical place."
