Spain's 'best winter sun destination' has golden beaches and 23C October weather
Spain is renowned for boasting balmy temperatures even during the winter months but there's one holiday hotspot that you will definitely want on your radar
Summer may be over but if you're hoping to avoid those dreary cold winter days for as long as possible, then you may want to bookmark a trip to Majorca this winter.
That's because the beautiful island has been named Spain's best winter sun destination this year, boasting balmy temperatures of around 23C as late as October. Even in November and December the island has sunny weather as well as temperatures between 16-19C, so while it may not be hot enough to swim in the ocean, it's still ideal weather for a beachfront walk or an al fresco lunch although you might want an extra layer or two!
(Of course if you are looking for somewhere hot and sunny next month then we've got you covered with a round-up of the best holiday destinations for October).
While Majorca is hardly a hidden gem, it does often go under the radar when it comes to the winter months. However, while you may not find the nightlife that's available in the summer, there is still heaps to see and do if you want to enjoy some downtime on the island.
For example, a trip to Playa de Muro Beach is a must; it's been named one of Europe's most beautiful beaches after all. There are plenty of walks nearby if you fancy a scenic stroll, not to mention it's just a stone's throw away from the S'Albufera Natural Park.
For cyclists, the island's hills and mixed terrain are often a hit and during the autumn/winter months, you won't be navigating crowds of tourists which can make for a much more relaxed morning's adventure.
If you are after a bit of an atmosphere, Palma is your best bet for plenty of shops, restaurants and bars, as well as some of the clubs that still host plenty of great nights out throughout the year. Most hotels and all-inclusive resorts will also stay open well into the winter months, so when it comes to finding somewhere to stay on a budget you're unlikely to struggle, although it's worth checking the rules at your hotel as some do close their pools or parts of their services during low seasons.
What makes Majorca such a tempting destination for the winter is of course its beautiful scenery. Those golden beaches, the lush green coastal walks and the historic sites can be much more enjoyable away from the peak summer crowds, and on sunny days there's still ample opportunity to make the most of the fresh air, and escape the gloomy British weather.
Another reason to have it on your radar? Recent research from the team at FerryHopper has uncovered it as Spain's best winter sun hotspot. In fact, it was the second warmest destination in Europe, pipped to the post by Malta. To determine the must-visit spots, researchers looked at a number of factors including the average temperature, average daylight house and hotel prices during the winter months.
