Underrated EU seaside town with multi-coloured houses is still 15C in February
A charming, little known town in Europe close to a stunning Mediterranean coastline and river boasts historical architecture and picture-perfect, pastel-hued houses.
A Sardinian town has something for everyone - a rich cultural heritage within its Medieval streets, a magnificent river against a backdrop of hills, busy cafes and a host of pristine beaches nearby.
For those who love to discover new holiday resorts and places to visit, a picturesque seaside town on the Mediterranean coast is waiting to be explored. It is situated about two-thirds of the way up the west coast of the island of Sardinia, on a small hill.
Approximately two miles inland on the north bank of the Temo River is the charming town of Bosa, which many would not have heard of but which has so much to offer the discerning traveller. It is set against a backdrop of rocky hills and lush valleys and offers many a picture opportunity thanks to its incredible beauty.
The maze of cobbled streets, palazzos with their traditional balconies, busy cafes and pretty pastel-coloured buildings capture what Sardinianbeaches.com describes as "the true Mediterranean spirit". The town centre is vibrant and the river flows alongside it and the Malaspina castle which offers incredible views of the town. It also houses perfect examples of Italian craftsmanship and beautiful fifteenth century frescos.
The rich cultural heritage of Bosa is everywhere from the historic Medieval town square to the gilded dome of the cathedral. The area was inhabited since prehistoric times as is seen with the presence of a number of rock-cut tombs and ancient edifices from the Nuragic age between 1900 and 730BC. Along the river are the ruins of tanneries which used to export fine leather all over Europe and which reflect the town’s important economic history. Such is its commitment to sustaining its heritage, Bosa is part of an association of the most beautiful villages of Italy which aims to preserve and maintain small locations with historical and artistic significance.
Visitors who want to relax and enjoy the breathtaking beaches of Sardinia’s coastline are well-catered for too. Not far from the town are various beaches each offering something different from the wild vegetation and limestone alcoves to Bosa Marina with its awesome views and sunsets. For those who seek some more energetic thrills, there are snorkelling tours of the coastline’s coves, horse-riding on the beaches, quad bike tours and paragliding adventures to be had.
During February temperatures can reach as high as 17C but it can also get chilly too, so warmer clothes should be packed alongside your swimwear. In the summer months of July and August it can often be extremely hot, with temperatures sometimes reaching over 30C.
Visitors to Bosa have shared their experiences on Tripadvisor. One wrote: "The coast road is the most fantastic diverse road. Bosa is a fab small village that is central for exploring the area, the people are very friendly. Bosa marina beach was so busy (31 july till 14 aug) there are numerous other small cove beaches along the coast road. So relaxing, chilled, and great local events." Another shared: "We have had an amazing week in Bosa, peaceful, picturesque, clean and friendly and we will definitely return in the future. Would recommend to all who like sun , sea and something a little different from costas." A third said: "One of my favorite places. The narrow streets, the oldness, and the river which runs through town became a real attraction."
