BBC Motherland star's 'brilliant' family drama that boasts a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is about to stream for free.

In an historic deal, Trying will be available on the BBC iPlayer from next week. Previously, the series was exclusively only accessible for those with a subscription to Apple TV+, the network for which it was produced.

This makes the first time that the BBC has purchased the rights to a show made by the company responsible for the iPhone and Ted Lasso. According to Deadline, the broadcaster has snapped up the first three seasons with an option for further instalments, as the show prepares to debut its fifth outing on its original streamer.

According to the synopsis for the show's first season, all Nikki and Jason want is a baby, which is the one thing they can't have. So they decide to adopt but with their dysfunctional friends, screwball families and chaotic lives, the adoption panel may not agree they're ready to be parents.

The show started back in 2020 and stars Rafe Spall and Esther Smith in the lead roles. Joining them in the impressive cast are Rivals and Motherland actor Oliver Chris and The Crown star Imelda Staunton.

Overall the series records an overall rating of 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with many critics praising its approach to a sensitive topic and claiming the show is an addictive watch.

While it is very much an Apple show, BBC Studios Comedy Productions had a part to play in it being made. Since then it has become the streamer's longest running comedy series.

Producer Josh Cole is now relishing the opportunity that the series will be available to even more viewers. He said: "Trying isn’t trying to be the loudest show but it’s one that people really fall deeply in love with I’m pleased that it will be seen by a whole new audience.”

Many fans who have been watching since it started have shared their recommendations. One person simply stated: "Each episode got better and better. Absolutely brilliant show. Looking forward to the next series."
