‘Beautiful and heart-wrenching’ Saoirse Ronan film that was nominated for six Oscars is now streaming
The 2019 drama was helmed by Barbie director Greta Gerwig
Saoirse Ronan's 2019 romantic drama that fans branded 'one of the best movie adaptations of a book' is now available to watch at home.
Based on a famous 19th-century novel, the drama was helmed by Barbie director Greta Gerwig and boasts a star-studded cast.
Alongside Ronan, the ensemble includes Oscar-nominated actors Timothee Chalamet and Florence Pugh, who were just rising to mainstream fame around the time of the film's premiere.
Fans of the actors will be thrilled to learn that Little Women is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
Adapted from the Louisa May Alcott classic novel, it follows the story of four sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, as they navigate growing up in Massachusetts.
Set during and after the American Civil War, the story has inspired various film and television adaptations.
Some of these include a 1933 version with Katharine Hepburn, an Oscar-winning 1949 flick with Elizabeth Taylor and a popular nineties rendition starring Winona Ryder.
However, it is Gerwig's take on the Christmas tale that critics consider the most true to its source material.
Following its debut, the Academy Awards lauded the adaptation and nominated Gerwig for the Best Adapted Screenplay of 2020. Little Women also earned Ronan a nomination for the Best Actress prize.
Meanwhile Pugh was named in the Best Supporting Actress category. The flick was additionally nominated for the Best Costume Design, Best Music and Best Picture prizes.
In the end, it took home the gold for the Best Costume Design.
Audiences have been raving about the book-to-screen adaptation since its debut over five years ago.
"This is one of the best movie adaptations of a book I have ever seen. I absolutely adore the book, and I was slightly apprehensive about the movie, but my expectations were absolutely blown away! I felt ALL the emotions watching this film," one Rotten Tomatoes reviewer penned.
Meanwhile, the critics on the platform, who awarded the film a 95% score, wrote: "With a stellar cast and a smart, sensitive retelling of its classic source material, Greta Gerwig's Little Women proves some stories truly are timeless."
Another fan gushed: "An utterly warm and cosy picture. Remakes or renditions of classic stories can oftentimes fall short on the mark- by either changing too much and taking away from the original story or trying to replicate too much. Greta, however, mastered creating such a beautiful rendition of this story that is close to perfection."
Yet another moviegoer took to IMDB and quipped: "If you need a good cry watch Little Women. It's beautiful and heart wrenching at the same time."
Little Women is now on Prime Video.
