The 'best modern fantasy film' with new Paul Mescal sequel is on TV tonight
The action-packed drama, which was recently revived for a sequel, will air on BBC Three tonight and is available to stream for free on iPlayer
An action-packed film that bagged five Oscars and was hailed as 'one of the best films of a generation' is set to grace our TV screens today.
Gladiator, originally released in 2000, will be broadcast on BBC Three tonight (December 29) at 9pm and is available for streaming on iPlayer.
The Ridley Scott masterpiece, which was recently brought back to life with a sequel, Gladiator II, featuring Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal, is widely praised by cinephiles. Now, viewers have the chance to revisit the film that started it all, free of charge.
Starring Russell Crowe, the historical drama follows Roman General Maximus after he is stripped of his rank by a corrupt emperor who murdered his family.
Reduced to slavery, Maximus seeks vengeance for his family while battling for survival in the gladiatorial arena, reports the Daily Record.
Upon its premiere, the film raked in an impressive $465.5 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2000, just behind Mission: Impossible II.
The action drama also won over critics and scooped up five Academy Awards at the 2001 ceremony, including Best Actor for Crowe, Best Supporting Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, and Best Picture.
Joining the star-studded cast were Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi, who reprised their roles in the 2024 sequel.
Over two decades after its release, fans continue to sing praises of Gladiator.
"One of the best films of a generation, it's a bold claim, but Gladiator truly is that good. Every single element is perfect, the story is phenomenal, one to absorb you for the full running time," reviewed an IMDB user.
Others shared the admiration, with one stating: "Seriously the best fantasy film of the modern era with great acting and [an] emotional rollercoaster all the way through. The soundtrack by Zimmer really propels this film."
Although Hans Zimmer was nominated for an Oscar for his score, he did not secure the win.
Another reviewer agreed: "20 years on, the first DVD I bought is still a barnstorming, thrilling ride. There's so much to recommend this - Lisa Gerrard and Hans Zimmer's iconic score, the canny casting of Joaquin Phoenix as a foil for Crowe; the realisation that I quote this film in everyday conversation far more than I thought I did."
Referencing the film's iconic line, a separate commenter quipped: "As a matter of fact, Maximus, I am entertained. Gladiator is the best bread and circus. A moving and very entertaining action epic with Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix delivering top-notch performances."
Gladiator airs tonight (December 29) at 9PM on BBC Three
