Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan reveals costume issues led to her injuring co-star

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington in the Netflix hit, struggled to walk in the character's wardrobe

Actress Nicola Coughlan hilariously confessed she accidentally injured one of her Bridgerton co-stars on her first day of filming for the Netflix hit.

The Derry Girls actress plays Penelope Featherington on the new series that everyone is talking about.

Speaking on This Morning on Tuesday, she admitted to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that things didn't go to plan at the start of filming.

After the costume department gave her heels to wear as they felt she was a bit short for the big dresses, Nicola had to work extra hard to walk in the scenes without tumbling - which she did numerous times.

But one moment involving a parasol led to the actress accidentally "stabbing" her co-star Claudia Jessie in the hand.

The Eloise Bridgerton star was left bleeding, but all was forgiven - and Nicola ditched the heels for the rest of filming.

Nicola explained: "I went in for my first costume fitting and they were like, 'you're very small, maybe we'll put you in heels'.

"I said, 'Yep, absolutely', because I think when you get a big job like that you're just terrified of messing it up. So you'll say yes to pretty much everything they ask you.

"It became evident pretty quickly on my first day I couldn't walk in these heels, so I was sort of walking along in my scenes and with my corset and everything I had no sort of central strength.

"So I just completely toppled over and landed on the ground. It happened twice more, I fell over three times.

"The third time I was carrying a parasol, which held in the wrong hands can be a deadly weapon.

"I fell forward really quickly and stabbed Claudia Jessie in the hand and it drew blood, and that was the first day.

"I stabbed her, but she forgave me and we are still friends. There was a meeting where they said, 'we don't think she can manage them'."

The series is available to stream now on Netflix, with a second series said to be on the cards.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
