Celeb Traitors' Joe Marler left pregnant wife sobbing on floor - 'the most ashamed I've been'
Joe Marler, who is currently competing on The Celebrity Traitors amongst a host of other famous faces, has recalled a moment he was the 'most ashamed' he has ever been in his life
Joe Marler has recalled a moment he was the 'most ashamed' he has ever been in his life. The rugby star, 35, is married to Daisy Maler and the pair have four children together, but he previously spoke out about a time that a row led him to his lowest point.
Joe, who is currently competing on BBC One's Celebrity Traitors alongside fellow famous faces like Alan Carr, Charlotte Church and Stephen Fry amongst a host of others, first opened up on the incident in 2018, which all stemmed from the fact he failed to swerve and avoid a squirrel in the road on the way home from the school run.
He said: "I turned over the kitchen, punched in one of the doors. Then I got in the truck and drove off. I had no idea where I was going or what I was doing. But it was a massive turning point because it was the most ashamed I’ve ever been. I didn’t recognise who I was anymore.
"After 30 minutes I came back because I was running out on everything good in my life. Daisy was crying and I was worried she was scared, but we’ve spoken about it often since then. She says, ‘I was never scared of you. I was just upset and wondering who you were and what you were doing."
In the resurfaced interview with The Guardian, he added: "She had no idea even during those times when she’d said, ‘Any danger of you actually being here, when you’re here?’ I wasn’t engaging because I was stuck in this fog. I didn’t feel like I could tell her or anyone because I was in complete denial there was anything wrong with me. We didn’t speak that night."
The whole incident led to Joe seeking help. He said: "That was the moment I was just like I need help. So I went and got help. I went and saw a psychologist called Humphrey and I was not comfortable doing it, even with someone called Humphrey, and I got there and what an incredibly lovely bloke he was."
Joe previously branded Traitors as one of "the most bonkers experiences I've ever done", and spoke of his ambition to team up with England's former boss Eddie Jones but reckoned it was an improbable partnership as he threatens to butt heads with the former England boss.
He told Wales Online : "I'd love to go head-to-head with The Beaver. He's quite a character, I'd get on really well with him but I'd love to go head-to-head. But I've got a funny feeling that any live broadcasters will probably avoid me like the plague."
Despite stepping away in November 2024 following a 15-year journey, the star has found himself yearning for the squad environment and the excitement of match day.
The seasoned campaigner collected 95 caps for England, with his final outing coming against the All Blacks in July of the previous year.
When quizzed about a possible England comeback, he said: "You never say never.
"I miss the day-to-day, the day-to-day camaraderie, the buzz of a game day. I do miss it a lot."
