Disney sparks backlash as it unveils 'chilling' new film with Longlegs star
Viewers have been left fuming over the fresh trailer
Disney+ fans have been left fuming after getting a first look at the streaming service's 'chilling' remake of an iconic psychological thriller.
Longlegs star Maika Monroe takes on the infamous nanny role once embodied by Rebecca De Mornay in the soon-to-be-released remake of 1992's The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead portrays a beleaguered mother in need of childcare.
Disney's synopsis teases: "Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Caitlin Morales, an upscale suburban mom who brings a new nanny, Polly Murphy (Maika Monroe), into her home, only to discover she is not the person she claims to be."
The cast also includes Raúl Castillo (Smile 2), Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks), Mileiah Vega, Wednesday's Riki Lindhome, and Shannon Cochran (The Ring). It is written by BAFTA nominee Micah Bloomberg based on the screenplay by Amanda Silver.
The new film which promises a 'modern twist' on the tale will be available to stream exclusively on Disney+ from October 22, meaning there are just weeks to wait. However, fans of the nineties thriller have been left less than impressed by news of the remake and argue that the original can't be beaten.
One fan commented under the trailer: "Ok sure but Rebecca De Mornay will never be surpassed. I remember one of the scariest scenes was her peeling an apple. Even THAT was vicious and if you can make cutting fruit terrifying you deserve an Oscar."
Meanwhile a second said: "I’ll stick with the original version," while a third penned: "And yet another worthless remake that nobody asked for. The target audience has never heard of the original, and fans of the original will stick with Rebecca De Mornay."
A fourth echoed the sentiment, adding: "You can't find anyone that has an original idea instead of doing re-makes? Do better. Tired of this."
Not everyone was disappointed with the upcoming remake however, with one viewer more optimistic as they shared that it was their "favourite movie in all time [sic]", while another simply shared a heart emoji under the trailer reveal.
