Squid Game season 3 release date and trailer as chilling teaser unveils harrowing twist

Squid Game has been confirmed to return for a third and final season on Netflix, with the streaming platform announcing the exact release date of the next series.

Netflix's Squid Game smashed its own viewing records, with the Season 2 launch on Boxing Day pulling in a whopping 68 million views within the first week, soaring past the record previously held by Wednesday at 50.1 million views.

The much-talked-about Korean drama had viewers on tenterhooks as it ended with a suspense-packed cliffhanger, sparking widespread speculation about the timeline for its third and final season return.

Season 2 was a rollercoaster of terror and tragedy and unlike the first chapter, left the fates of many characters up in the air.

The storyline follows Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) as he once again plunges into the fatal contests, determined to halt them once and for all.

This season introduced viewers to fresh faces, such as the pregnant Jun-hee (portrayed by Jo Yuri) and the downtrodden crypto influencer Myung-gi (acted out by Yim Si-wan), reports the Mirror US.

Although the end of season two fuelled a pool of burning questions, fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they do not have long left to wait until season three.

When is the Squid Game season 3 release date?

Netflix announced the final season of the series would be released on June 27.

A synopsis reads: "A failed rebellion, the death of a friend, and a secret betrayal. Picking up in the aftermath of season two’s bloody cliffhanger, the third and final season of Netflix’s most popular series finds Gi-hun, a.k.a. Player 456, at his lowest point yet.

"But the Squid Game stops for no one, so Gi-hun will be forced to make some important choices in the face of overwhelming despair as he and the surviving players are thrust into deadlier games that test everyone’s resolve.

"With each round, their choices lead to increasingly grave consequences. Meanwhile, In-ho resumes his role as Front Man to welcome the mysterious VIPs, and his brother Jun-ho continues his search for the elusive island, unaware there’s a traitor in their midst. Will Gi-hun make the right decisions, or will Front Man finally break his spirit?"

Is there a trailer for Squid Game season 3?

A trailer was released on March 6 and it shows a coffin being presented as the contestants gather around. Gi-hun's body is seen inside the coffin, but he is confirmed to still be alive.

The trailer continues to show the close-knit teams get separated, with many alliances having to battle against one another.

A baby is also heard crying, suggesting Jun Hee gives birth - but will both mother and baby survive until the end?

Who is in the cast of Squid Game season 3?

Most of the cast from season two will be returning, accept for one, as Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) was murdered at the end of season two.
