The Girlfriend release date, cast, episodes and trailer as thriller already leaves fans with 'chills'

The Girlfriend is based on Michelle Frances' novel of the same name.

The Girlfriend is coming to Prime Video soon and the steamy thriller follows a successful wife and mother whose life is ruined when he son brings home a new partner.


The series centres around Laura, who has a successful career and a loving family, including her son Daniel.


Laura's perfect life starts to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry - a new girlfriend who changes the whole dynamic of the family.


After a tense introduction, Laura is adamant Cherry is hiding something and has her own agenda.

When is The Girlfriend out?

The Girlfriend will be released on Prime Video on September 10, with all episodes available at the same time.

The series will air exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories around the world.

Who is in the cast of The Girlfriend?

The series stars Robin Wright as Laura, and the 59-year-old actress is best known for her roles in Forrest Gump and House of Cards.

Olivia Cooke plays Cherry, and the 31-year-old star is known for her role as Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon, as well as Emma Decody in the thriller Bates Motel.

Laurie Davidson stars as Daniel and the 33-year-old actor played a young William Shakespeare in the 2017 TNT television series Will, as well as Mr Mistoffelees in Cats, based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical.


Waleed Zuaiter plays Laura's husband Howard and the 54-year-old star is the producer and co-star of Omar, which was nominated for an Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards.

Tanya Moodie stars as Laura's best friend Isabella, and the 53-year-old actress is known for her roles in Motherland and Silo.

Shalom Brune-Franklin plays Isabella's daughter Brigitte and the actress recently starred in Prime Video's The Assassin.


Other stars include Karen Henthorn as Cherry's mum Tracey and Anna Chancellor as Lilith, a close friend of Laura's.

How many episodes are in The Girlfriend?

The series is made up of six episodes, with all six available to watch in one go.


The first episode sees Daniel confiding in his mother about a special girl he has met, but when Laura catches Cherry telling lies, she is immediately put off.

As Cherry works and plays amongst London's elite, she attempts to hide her humble beginnings and attempts to win over Laura.


Is there a trailer for The Girlfriend?

Yes, an official trailer was released in August and it appears to show there is definitely more to Cherry than meets the eye.

Viewers have taken to the comments to share their initial thoughts, with one fan quoting a line by Laura from the trailer.

They said: "'She remind you of me?' Every boy mom ever! Why do they have to be so creepy? I got chills watching this trailer!"


Another fan said: "All star cast, both powerhouse women. Can't wait to watch."

A third shared: "Thought this was a movie trailer. Series!? I'm sold."
