Gotham spoilers: The Joker teased as Cameron Monaghan appears in trailer for upcoming episode

Could Batman's greatest nemesis be coming face to face with Jim Gordon?

Gotham has dropped its biggest hint yet that the Joker will appear in the first series.

The show has done a fantastic job of hinting at the impending rise of Batman's foes, with the likes of Penguin, Riddler and Poison Ivy all being referenced - but his greatest nemesis could be on the way.

Although an official origin story has never really been settled on for the Joker, a new teaser for an upcoming episode has teased his arrival.

After recapping the villains we've met so far, the trailer promises: "Gotham's next villain is no joke."

By the end, we see an unhinged character - seemingly played by US Shameless' Cameron Monaghan - being interrogated by Jim Gordon and laughing manically.

It looks to be another exciting and intriguing iteration of a character previously portrayed by the likes of Heath Ledger, Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson.

The teaser follows the announcement that Jaret Leto will take on the iconic role in another project when DC Comics' Suicide Squad is brought to the big screen.

Gotham will return on Monday on Fox in the States, but UK fans will have to wait a little longer until the show is back on Channel 5.
