The Inbetweeners comeback slammed as fans joke it will 'be a pretty sad watch'

The Inbetweeners has been missing from both the big and small screen since 2014 but a reunion is now officially on the cards.

The Inbetweeners comeback is in the works which is expected to once again revolve around everyone’s favourite group of foul-mouth friends.

It has been confirmed that the British cult classic The Inbetweeners will be back for more with creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris’ Fudge Park signing a new partnership with Banijay UK, paving “the way for the return of the hit comedy title”.

Banijay yUK said in a statement that the deal “unlocks the rights and the potential to bring The Inbetweeners back for new audiences,” while Beesley and Morris commented: “Incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends).”

No further details have been released regarding whether it will be a new series or film coming out but not all fans are thrilled with news of its return.

Despite its popularity, some fans voiced their concerns that a return would spoil the franchise.

“Big fan of the show, but I don't really see the point," someone remarked on Reddit. “The second movie showed where the line was between cringe funny and sad.

“Having them remain the same characters in their 40s is going to be a pretty sad watch.”

Another agreed: “What's the point? Not sure I'm going to find a bunch of 30 somethings (well probably 40 somethings now) living boring lives particularly funny.”

A third asked: “Why have original ideas, when you can just reboot existing properties endlessly and never take any chances?”

Someone else then remarked: “Honestly I think this is a terrible idea. I loved the show, but it worked because of its moment in time.”

Initially airing on E4, The Inbetweeners ran for three seasons from 2008 to 2010 with the first film released in 2011 and the sequel in 2014, together making more than £100 million worldwide.

The sitcom revolved around the misadventures of Will McKenzie (played by Simon Bird), Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison) and Jay Cartwright (James Buckley) who endured the stereotypical teen problems at Rudge Park Comprehensive.

The Inbetweeners also helped to launch the careers of some other major stars including actresses Emily Atack and Hannah Tointon and The Thursday Murder Club’s Henry Lloyd Hughes.

Comedian Greg Davies also has an integral role in The Inbetweeners as the terrifying teacher Mr Gilbert.

The Inbetweeners is available to watch on All4.
