Josh O’Connor fans 'freaking out' as Challengers star reported to lead in new art heist film

Josh O’Connor fans are celebrating after reports erupted about the star's rumoured role in a Kelly Reichardt heist film, set to start filming next month.

Josh O’Connor fans are celebrating after reports swirling around named him as the star in Kelly Reichardt’s upcoming heist movie, The Mastermind.

The 34-year-old actor has been a trending topic on social media since starring across Zendaya and Mike Faist in Luca Guadagnino's summer blockbuster Challengers. The tennis drama grossed $94,219,408 worldwide and was highly-rated by critics, earning a 88% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, O’Connor is swapping out tennis rackets for an ‘audacious art heist’ that unfolds between the 1960s and 1970s, during the Vietnam War, The World of Reel reports.

Filming is reportedly scheduled to start this October in Ohio but the production company has not yet confirmed O’Connor’s involvement in the project. Though that hasn't stopped fans from cheering on the star.

Social media was abuzz after the reports spread, with one user on X, formerly Twitter, rejoicing: "Kelly Reichardt… Josh O’Connor…I just started levitating." Another exclaimed: "I’m FREAKING out." A third wrote: "I’m gonna pass out." Another thrilled fan simply exclaimed: "LET'S GO."

Fans also started pointing out the actor’s growing list of upcoming films which include:

  • Knives Out 3 alongside Daniel Craig and Cailee Spaeny
  • Separate Rooms directed by Luca Gaudagnino
  • History of Sound opposite Paul Mescal
  • Rosebushpruning with Kristen Stewart and Elle Fanning

Like O’Connor, Kelly Reichardt is also gaining praise from fans following the rumours. The acclaimed screenwriter and director is known for thought-provoking films like her fan-favourite 2013 thriller Night Moves, which starred Jesse Eisenberg.

The Mastermind would mark the actor and director’s first film together. While details are still under wraps, the official cast is expected to be revealed soon, according to Ion Cinema.
