Netflix drops first-look at ‘wild’ new comedy-thriller from creator of Derry Girls
Netflix has announced the cast, release date and first plot details for Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee’s next series
Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee’s next series has been given an exciting first-look from Netflix.
Comedy-thriller How to Get to Heaven from Belfast will be released on the platform next February and is looking like a must-watch for fans of McGee’s hit period comedy.
Roísín Gallagher, Sinéad Keenan and Caoilfhionn Dunne star as a trio of friends, Saoirse, Robyn and Dara, who have been inseparable since school and now embark on a “wild adventure” in their late 30s.
Derry Girls favourite Art Campion will also star, though the series will mostly feature a brand new cast which also includes Tom Basden and Michelle Fairley.
Josh Finan, Bronagh Gallagher, Darragh Hand, Ardal O’Hanlon, Natasha O’Keeffe and Emmett J. Scanlan will also star.
A synopsis for the series from Netflix reads: “Clever, chaotic TV writer Saoirse; glamorous, stressed-out mother of three Robyn; and dependable, inhibited carer Dara have been a tight-knit group since school.
“Now in their late 30s, but still as close as ever, these three friends are about to embark on the most thrilling adventure of their lives.
“When an email arrives, telling them about the death of the estranged fourth member of their childhood gang, a series of eerie events at her wake sets them on a dark, dangerous, and hilarious odyssey through Ireland and beyond as each tries to piece together the truth about the past.”
Taking a thrilling departure from the raunchy yet poignant comedy of Derry Girls, McGee’s ambitious new series will feature eight hour-long episodes and uncover a thrilling mystery - with plenty of laughs along the way as well.
Creator McGee tells Tudum: “We got the gang back together — the creative team behind Derry Girls has reunited to bring you How to Get to Heaven from Belfast.
“This is the show I’ve always wanted to make; a mash‑up of my two favourite genres, mystery and comedy. We want to keep you guessing and keep you laughing.
“I can’t wait for you to meet Saoirse, Robyn and Dara, and go on this wild, weird adventure with them — an Irish odyssey — full of twists, turns, and arguments about eyelash extensions.”

Sky is giving away a free Netflix subscription with its new Sky Stream TV bundles, including the £15 Essential TV plan.
This lets members watch live and on-demand TV content without a satellite dish or aerial and includes hit shows like Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
She added that she’s “in awe of this cast, their talent, timing and chemistry”, and also praised director Michael Lennox as “simply stunning”.
McGee concludes: “Netflix has been so incredibly supportive of our mad vision. Get ready to piece this puzzle together. And remember — a good friend keeps your secrets, but a great friend helps you bury them.”
How to Get to Heaven From Belfast will be released in February 2026 on Netflix.
