Netflix's gripping drama No One Saw Us Leave has fans on the edge of their seats, but is it based on real-life events?
Set in 1960s Mexico, young mum Valeria Goldberg (portrayed by Tessa Ia) finds herself trapped in a loveless arranged marriage to Leo Saltzman (Emiliano Zurita), the son of a powerful businessman.
However, when her affair with Leo's brother-in-law Carlos (Gustavo Bassni) comes to light, the influential Saltzman family turns against her, doing everything they can to tarnish her reputation within the tight-knit Jewish community.
Leo, under his parents' advice, takes things a step too far by whisking away their children, Tamara and Isaac, to Europe without Valeria's consent or knowledge.
Upon discovering her children are missing, Valeria seeks the help of private investigator Elias (Ari Brickman) to locate them, while her formidable in-laws use their clout to prevent her from finding them for over two years.
Is Netflix'is No One Saw Us Leave based on a true story?
Yes, Netflix's Mexican thriller No One Saw Us Leave is rooted in reality.
The storyline is based on the 2020 memoir Nadie nos vio partir, penned by author Tamara Trottner who was one of the abducted children depicted in the drama.
The book recounts her experience of being kidnapped by her own father, with his wealthy Jewish-Mexican family aiding in keeping them hidden from their mother in 1968.
Netflix's thriller deviates from the memoir as it is narrated from Valeria's viewpoint as she frantically searches for Tamara and Isaac.
The official description of the book states: "The table is round. Made of mahogany and barely big enough to hold a grey rotary phone.
"I look up; at this age, you have to look up to see anyone.
"My brother and I anxiously listen as our father speaks into the receiver.
"My gaze shifts from one to the other while I struggle to understand what's happening.
"I just turned five. This day will mark the end of my childhood."
The Netflix drama's closing credits reveal that neither Tamara nor Isaac saw their father again for 20 years after they were reunited with their mum.
Valeria and Carlos also remained together for the rest of their lives until his death in 1997.
No One Saw Us Leave is available to watch on Netflix.
