‘Brilliant’ period drama adaptation with Game of Thrones star streaming for free

The BBC series was praised by audiences when it first came out

Viewers seeking a captivating period drama should definitely tune into this lavish BBC adaptation of a notorious banned novel, which follows in the footsteps of another star-studded costume drama that has gripped audiences, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The production aired in 2015 as part of the BBC's collection of 20th-century literary adaptations, sitting alongside Laurie Lee's Cider With Rosie, L. P. Hartley's The Go-Between and J. B. Priestley's play An Inspector Calls.

This historical drama earned widespread acclaim from viewers upon its initial broadcast.

One viewer wrote on IMDb: "Holy mother of God! I don't even know where to begin with trying to compile my thoughts into comprehensible sentences."

Another titled their review: "Captured me start to finish" and explained: "I really turned to this well cast film more as a distraction to fill time than a sought out choice. The fact that the chemistry of the actors left me with a sense of connection is the ultimate mark of success from actors and director.

"The obstinance of the rich and powerful revealed in their disregard of the working class is highlighted frequently on this retelling of the 1928 classic novel."

A five-star review on Google read: "Jed Mercurio's adaptation, exploring the class system in this version was brilliant."

Unlike previous versions of the literary work, this interpretation concentrated heavily on social inequality rather than the more controversial aspects that led to the book's prohibition for decades in Britain.

One viewer penned on IMDb regarding the film: "Chaste Version of the Lawrence Classic Emphasizing Class Conflict."

They went on to say: "To be honest, this version of LADY CHATTERLEY does not make any attempt to explore sexual feelings in any great depth, as in Lawrence's source-text.

"Director Mercurio sees the story as a tussle between duty and emotion, which reaches a climax at the end when the three protagonists at last confront one another."

They concluded that the picture was a "thoroughly satisfying production of the Lawrence classic".

Lady Chatterley's Lover was released in 2015 and offered a markedly different interpretation of D. H. Lawrence's 1928 novel bearing the same title.

The production featured Game of Thrones star Richard Madden as gamekeeper Oliver Mellors, Strike favourite Holliday Grainger as Lady Constance Chatterley, and Grantchester's James Norton portraying her spouse Sir Clifford Chatterley.

The narrative chronicled the Chatterleys' blissful union until Sir Clifford sustained serious injuries during World War I, rendering him impotent and in a wheelchair.

The pair's bond deteriorated and the gulf widened, with Constance developing a connection to gamekeeper Mellors regardless of his lower-class background.

Eventually, Mellors and Constance became romantically involved, compelling the duo to decide between Britain's inflexible social hierarchy or pursuing their desires.

Additional cast members featured future Killing Eve star Jodie Comer, Wolf Hall's Edward Holcroft, and another Game of Thrones veteran Enzo Cilenti. This rendition of Lady Chatterley's Lover has been penned and helmed by Jed Mercurio, the mastermind behind Line of Duty and Bodyguard, marking a new direction for the acclaimed writer.
