5 series by Sally Wainwright to binge if you loved Riot Women

Following the release of Riot Women, we've rounded up five more hit series written by Sally Wainwright for fans to binge-watch next...

If you've binge-watched BBC's latest series Riot Women like we did, you're no doubt looking for your next TV fix from writer Sally Wainwright.

The TV writer is known for penning compelling drama series with a focus on strong female characters, and Riot Women perfectly demonstrates Sally's talent.

With all six hour-long episodes having landed on iPlayer, many watched the series in one sitting, but thankfully Sally's created several other TV dramas, including Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack and Last Tango in Halifax.

Here, we've rounded up five more TV series penned by Sally for you to get stuck into, including where to watch each one...

Last Tango in Halifax

Starring Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid, Last Tango in Halifax is a romantic comedy set to have you in fits of laughter while pulling at your heartstrings.

The show tells the story of Celia (Reid) and Alan (Jacobi), two former childhood sweethearts, who are both widowed and in their seventies. Their grandsons share their details to a social networking site, leading them to find one another and rekindle their love after 60 years apart.

Last Tango in Halifax was praised for its depiction of the older generation by critics and fans, with the show branded a "triumph against TV's ageism" upon its release in 2012.

The show is set in Yorkshire and also stars Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker.

Last Tango in Halifax is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Scott & Bailey

British police drama Scott & Bailey debuted in 2011 and received rave reviews upon its release. The show continued for five series before coming to a close in 2016, much to fans' disappointment.

Scott & Bailey delves into the personal and professional lives of detectives Janet Scott and Rachel Bailey, who are both members of the Syndicate Nine Major Incident Team (MIT) of the fictional Manchester Metropolitan Police.

The series boasts a star-studded cast, made up of Suranne Jones, Lesley Sharp, Amelia Bullmore, Nicholas Gleaves, Danny Miller and Pippa Haywood.

The original concept was created by Suranne and Sally Lindsay, with Sally Wainwright then teaming up with Diane Taylor, a former detective inspector, to bring the series to life.

All five series of Scott & Bailey can be streamed on ITVX.

Happy Valley

Happy Valley is another hit crime drama penned and created by Sally, starring Sarah Lancashire, James Norton and Siobhan Finneran.

The show began back in 2014 and eventually concluded in 2023, with a total of three series airing on BBC One.

Sarah takes centre stage as Catherine Cawood, a divorced police sergeant living in Halifax, West Yorkshire. She is still trying to recover after her daughter took her own life eight years previously, and is now raising her grandson, Ryan, who was born after her daughter was raped by Tommy Lee Royce (Norton).

The description for the first series continues: "Just when it seems like Catherine is gaining control over her life, she discovers that Tommy, whom she holds responsible for her daughter's suicide, has been released from prison after serving time for other offences.

"Catherine becomes consumed by the idea of confronting him, unaware that Tommy is involved in a criminal organisation with the intention of kidnapping Anne Gallagher, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, for ransom."

Happy Valley is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Gentleman Jack

If crime dramas or romantic comedies aren't your thing, then maybe hit historical drama Gentleman Jack could be more to your liking.

Set in Yorkshire in the 1830s, Gentleman Jack tells the story of landowner and industrialist Anne Lister and fellow landowner, Ann Walker, who later becomes Anne's wife. The show is based on the collected diaries of Anne, which document a lifetime of romantic relationships.

Suranne Jones stars as Anne while Sophie Walker plays Ann. The pair are joined by Joe Armstrong, Amelia Bullmore, Rosie Cavaliero, Gemma Whelan, Gemma Jones, Timothy West and Tom Lewis in the series.

A description of Gentleman Jack reads: "In 1832, Miss Anne Lister leaves Hastings brokenhearted and returns to the Shibden Hall estate she has inherited from her uncle in the lush landscape of Halifax, West Yorkshire, England.

"While restoring the estate she discovers that her neighbours, the Rawson brothers, are stealing coal from the beds beneath her land and embarks on a plan to reopen the estate's own long-closed mine.

"At the same time this unusual lady landowner starts to develop a potentially dangerous romance with Miss Ann Walker, wealthy owner of Crow Nest estate, all of which she records in a cryptic diary."

Gentleman Jack can be streamed via BBC iPlayer.

Renegade Nell

Renegade Nell is a fantasy-action series developed for Disney+, which premiered back in March 2024. The show, written by Sally and produced by Lookout Point, only ran for one season.

Louisa Harland stars in the leading role of Nell Jackson, with Adrian Lester, Nick Mohammed, Bo Bragason, Enyi Okoronkwo and Craig Parkinson also starring.

A description of Renegade Nell reads: "Set in a fantasy version of 18th-century England, Nell Jackson becomes a highwaywoman, and the most feared person in the country, after being framed for murder. With the help of a magical sprite called Billy Blind, Nell realizes that her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined."

Renegade Nell is available to watch on Disney+.

Riot Women airs on BBC One on Sunday at 9pm and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
